UM Accelerated BSN Program May 2011

U.S.A. Florida

hi everybody! ive kinda been on and off stalking this forum for a little over a year and finally decided to join!:lol2:

heres my story...i applied into the may 2011 accelerated bsn program for UM, university of miami. i sent my application in dec 1 and transcripts dec 2nd. because i was currently enrolled in classes and because i took ONE college class in high school, my app was not considered for early decision even tho i submitted on the deadline date because all of my transcripts weren't in (a geology class which showed up on my bachelors transcripts and 6 credits worth of grad school). anyway, i have a BS from stony brook university in ny and have taken all of the nursing pre reqs except for chem, which i am currently enrolled in and UM is aware (she had me show her proof of enrollment to have my application stay in consideration). i have a 4.0 in the nursing pre reqs and a 3.52 on my bachelors (graduated cum laude)

the academic advisor told me that i wont hear back until march, but when reading through old discussions it looks like people received acceptance letters at all different types...how competitive is it to get in? do you think not having taken chemistry before would disqualify me? i am sooo nervous. i really want to get into this program and have heard soo many great things about UM.

i know alot of other schools have crazy wait lists, and some only accept the bare minimum amount of students. so im just wondering how many people are in the class and how competitive it really is. i also hope more than ANYTHING that i get in. what do you guys think?

Yunas,

When UM gave me a time frame on the letter and notification they were very punctual. In my opinion, if you can, get down there and visit ASAP.

I specifically remember the counselor and one of the head administrators telling me that they have so many qualified people applying it was/is really great to put a face and personality with the application.

I think it is a good move on your part that you were active with your application and followed up quite a bit on it.

I've applied for May 2011 but haven't heard yet (myUM doesn't even have a section to check my application- gonna have to call to see why), I'm wondering- when are most of the scholarship applications due? Can you apply for scholarships without having been accepted yet? thanks

I've been wondering the same thing. Does anyone know if this is possible?

Thanks!

Hello All,

This is a group answer to some of the inquiries I have seen in the previous posts:

-My previous counselor, who I understand is no longer there anymore, informed me that I could apply for the scholarship with an application already sent in.

-I would apply for this scholarship ASAP if that is your intention. I talked to a few current and past students, also read a blog from last year on the scholarship, and it seemed as if some students did not know of deadlines and missed the chance to apply.

-Read the fine print. Talked to two nurses at UM who received the scholarship. While they needed the money for school, it is now two years later and they are still working were they were placed. So if you want to go into a specific field one might have to wait a bit. However, at least you are guaranteed a job which is pretty tough to come by now.

Best of luck. I did not apply for scholarship so I do not know any more than what I posted.

Espress,

As for myUM not having a space to check your application-I did not have that either. I received a letter stating acceptance and about a week later it showed up on myUM. The only thing I can say is call to make sure your application is complete and being reviewed.

Bumping this up. I can't believe how quick some people got acceptance letters. I'm STILL waiting and my app has been in since dec 1st. I am gonna call again tomorrow and ask what's going on. I just need to know if I'm accepted or not because I have some serious planning to do either way :-/

Yunas,

Can you please post what they tell you tomorrow. I'm in the same boat, I sent my application on Dec. 1st and I'm still waiting. This waiting till march deadline has my whole life on hold.

I just applied now to the accelerated BSN program since I wasn't accepted to P.A school :( I did graduate from UM but how long did it take from when you first submitted your application till they accepted you?

Curious to know, thanks! :)

Since I'm a readmit the process is different and hence application status will not show up on myUM, or so I'm told. I was told that everything is complete and being reviewed and they will let me know in "March-April." I've taken this to mean that I'm waitlisted because when I applied in September I was told they would let me know in December and this has been true for many other applicants (prolly cuz i have 4 outstanding vital pre-reqs and not a great undergrad GPA, though I do have work experience I'm pretty sure they only care about numbers and nothing else (this was how it was for regular undergrad admission back when i applied in 2002- they only look at numbers))

I'm readmit too so I'm guessing that means it'll take a while :( I'm just doing some pre req's now

mrhurricane,

i tried calling the school before work but the SON wasnt open yet :-/ i emailed my academic advisor saying my mail sometimes get lost, and asked if they started sending out decision letters for people who applied in december. the response was that they are sending letters this week to those with a 3.3 GPA or higher, those with a lower overall undergrad GPA have not been reviewed yet, considering i have a 3.52 gpa for my BS and a 4.0 on 27 credits worth of nursing pre-reqs, i questioned that, because myum stills say my application is being reviewed. i guess the person then checked into it and told me my app hasnt even been reviewed by the dean yet and that i will know by march 1st...i cannot wait that long for a response...im going to have to look into alternatives. i literally have to change my entire life around to start school so i need to know sooner than later. i am seriously crossing my fingers HARD that this person reviews my app this week...if they are basing things off of grades and recommendations, it shouldnt have been this long to make a decision!. please k.i.t. and lmk if you hear anything.

i'm sure they look at many factors. i have a great gpa and still havent even had my app reviewed so idk... the only pre-req i messed up in was psych. got a c. thats the first, and only c ive ever had in ANY schooling, from kindergarden to the 6 years ive been taking classes! keep us updated please.
