UM Accelerated BSN Program May 2011

U.S.A. Florida

Published

hi everybody! ive kinda been on and off stalking this forum for a little over a year and finally decided to join!:lol2:

heres my story...i applied into the may 2011 accelerated bsn program for UM, university of miami. i sent my application in dec 1 and transcripts dec 2nd. because i was currently enrolled in classes and because i took ONE college class in high school, my app was not considered for early decision even tho i submitted on the deadline date because all of my transcripts weren't in (a geology class which showed up on my bachelors transcripts and 6 credits worth of grad school). anyway, i have a BS from stony brook university in ny and have taken all of the nursing pre reqs except for chem, which i am currently enrolled in and UM is aware (she had me show her proof of enrollment to have my application stay in consideration). i have a 4.0 in the nursing pre reqs and a 3.52 on my bachelors (graduated cum laude)

the academic advisor told me that i wont hear back until march, but when reading through old discussions it looks like people received acceptance letters at all different types...how competitive is it to get in? do you think not having taken chemistry before would disqualify me? i am sooo nervous. i really want to get into this program and have heard soo many great things about UM.

i know alot of other schools have crazy wait lists, and some only accept the bare minimum amount of students. so im just wondering how many people are in the class and how competitive it really is. i also hope more than ANYTHING that i get in. what do you guys think?

I just checked my um website. and the acceptace letter is there. Now, I can say. This is official. I hope you can receive your acceptance letters soon. :)

Yunas,

As I always say prayer works wonders so just keep praying about it and i'm sure it will work out for the best. I always think "Hey, somewhere's bound to take me" lol!. Keep checking my UM and the mail . I never asked you, did you list any health care experience on your application? and who wrote your letter(s) of recommendation for you( just titles no name)??

oh trust me i will be hoping and praying until i get a letter. LOL. i did not list health care experience because i dont really have any. i worked at a medical career training college for almost 2 years but that doesnt count. originally, i was going to have my former employer write my letter, but since she did not respond to me i reached out to two college professors; the one that responded first was my teacher for 3/4 parts of the a&p courses. so he wrote it for me!

lmaria!!! congratulations!!!!!!:balloons: hopefully we will all be classmates! yayyy!

I know you mentioned you were going to live in Palm Beach. I live in Boynton Beach, which belongs to the Palm Beach county. Maybe we can commute together, car pooling, or something like that. Let's keep in touch :)

Yunas,

I really really hope you get in, and you had higher stats than me so if your teacher wrote a strong letter that would be in your favor. I think my letters and health care experience is what made me the bottom end of the spectrum. I'm sure I will be the girl in the class with the lowest seeing as I sit at a 3.1 overall and 3.6 pre req. My letters came from (1) The Assistant Director of Nursing at my place of employment and (2) a teacher I had for Public Health Concepts last Spring. My upper division GPA is a 3.9 though, it was just my first 2 years at UF that I was pre-med it was murder lol...But keep your chin up!!

lmaria,

Omg thats gonna be a sucky commute on the way home. I dont think its too bad in the morning because less traffic but in the evening, yikes! I have no idea what to do about getting to campus. I will be commuting from Homestead, FL which is south of miami. Im still unsure if I should drive to the metrorail station and ride that to UM, or purchase a parking pass and drive the whole way. I guess I would have to speak to other students that are already in the program to figure out what they did. I am really excited about starting on this path!( I guess it hasn't set in yet that I will be without a life for 12 months)!

Idk if you were referring to me or not but I live in Jensen beach fl and have family that live in lake worth. Idk how close that is to boynton but if it is I would like to do that and save some miles on my LEASED car by only driving half way everyonce in awhile lol

I really hope we all get in! Me, you and Paco...and we can make it work financially ! Lol you guys seem soo nice and after Ll this waiting we are gonna know everything about each other. Lol. Can't wait to hear from them!

Talk about a commute... I will be commuting from Martin county :-/ but occasionally staying in wpb to make the commute more affordable. I was thinking of possibly buying a junky car to use for school so I don't overdo my lease mileage :-/

Yunas,

Thanks thats sweet. You seem very nice as well. I don't know about an old junkie car though, would hate for you to break down and miss clinicals or something :(... I hope it will all work out too. I am going to get everything notarized for the scholarship today and mail it off via priority mail so **crossing my fingers**. I am already indebted 12k from this current degree program I am in and am sure even with the scholarship I will need more. I think the cost of attendance is going to be about 57k there about so we at least need some help you know! Thats way too much in loans, not to mention I doubt I will be approved without a cosigner! Lets just keep our fingers crossed. I prayed for you last night so hopefully it works, and Ill continue to do so until you get your letter :)

I really hope you get in. Let's keep praying. Boynton is very close to Lake Worth. just 5-10 min South. Definitelly we can commute together so you can save some miles. I was also thinking that this was better to take the train most of the times. This would take around 1.40 min to get there, but we would save in gas and stress due to the bad traffic. In addition, we can use that time to study. The bad thing is that we would have to get up very early, but I guess this would be a year where we have to make a lot of sacrifices, but that would be worth it at the end. :)

wow. you guys are oh so sweet. i will make sure to put a good word in for you as well. :D i really hope this works out. no such luck with the USPS today... lmaria, that is GREAT news, i did not realize how close it is. once i know if i got in, i would definitely like to work our arrangements with you with carpooling and stuff...

grace, if i did get a junky kind of car, i would be getting like a civic that lasts for about 200k miles and that i know would be reliable. i just meant junky compared to my new car...llol

Yunas,

Best of luck! I was accepted in early October, but I applied last June. I found out I was accepted through a letter received a week after I made phone call to the School of Nursing. Aprroximately a week after that the notice showed up on myUM.

As for your grades I definitely think you are competitive in that area. Your pre-reqs are higher than mine and undergrad GPA about the same. I would not worry to much about taking Chemistry this semester. I talked to a few students currently in the program and they completed pre-reqs in the spring before the May start as well. I am taking a pre-req this semester too.

That said, I think UM SON looks at the entire person/application as well. There is no formal interview in the application process. However, in my experience after visiting the school, taking the tours, and discussing my application/credentials with a counselor, I noticed an increased interest level from UM SON.

Hope this helps.***Sorry, meant to post this on front page***

Yunas,

Oh ok thats not too bad then :) Hondas are good cars. Just Keep Checking the Mail. You will get in soon! :)

101, thanks for the insight. Idk if it's too late to do all that stuff (tour, admissions meeting, etc) but I hope that they are considering me. It sucks that I didn't know about this Bsn program until the last minute but the good news is they did say I was being considered for may. I am hoping for a decision soon so I know if I need to apply elsewhere....

Grace, I'm holding you to that letter being in the mail next week! :)
