Anyone looking at University Of Miami?

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hi everyone! just checking to see if anyone else is considering the University of Miami's generic BSN program or has went throught the program:idea: I know it's very expensive, but I'm hopeful for scholarships and loan reimbursement programs. It's really attractive now that they are like one of the few schools in the US that have the simulator thing for practice.... anyone out there???

I am considering the accelerated progam at the university of miami, but I am worried about the low pass rate for the NCLEX. Does anyone know why the pass rate has dropped so much in the past few years? Do you think that a low pass rate should keep me from attending?

Hey Birdy 3! i also checked out the pass rates, and they are not too low... from what i remember, it was like a 79.3% or something like that. Nova has a 100% pass rate, which is awesome! that's also another school I applied to. I wouldn't let it discourage you... i would take note of it, but you just never know what the circumstances could have been at the time. now, if the school is in the 50's like I saw a couple other schools, than that's a problem!! best of luck to you!

Hey Renee4christ, have you heard anything else good or bad about the University of Miami? The NCLEX pass rate just worries me because it is below the national average, I thought it was somewhere closer to 75%. Maybe the new nursing building and all of the advances in technology, like the simulation equipment, will help to better prepare the nursing students.

All i keep hearing now is all about the new building and simulation!!!! i think it's wonderful. the school is Very expensive though. this is what i have done to get more of a personal opinion of UM. I went onto Myspace and emailed everyone that i could that goes to or graduated from UM's nursing program. I asked them all the questions that i wanted to know about the program based on their experience. out of probably almost 50 responses, i only got about 3 negative ones. everyone else felt as though the school is worth it, especially with the new technology. all the graduates that i talked to had passed the NCLEX.. maybe you should do that for the accelerated program. you just go under "seach by school" and type in the major of nursing. it is very helpful. I will go to UM if i am not accepted to Nova, only because Nova is half the price, and just as good, and has a 100% pass rate like i said before. i think the big thing about UM is the name. I love football, so that really attracts me, but if i can go somewhere else for cheaper, i will choose the other. it also depends on the financial aid package that i can get, because i really don't want to have a lot of loans!!! are you looking for financial aid or ready to take out loans? how old are you and where did you do your undergrad?

oh! and as far as pros and cons for the UM.. all that hear is what i hear from all nursing school students, and that's the disorganization! that's the most common complaint i have heard. for the postives, several of the students loved the clinical experience at some of the top hospitals in the country (Jackson Memorial Health Care System, Miami Children's Hospital). they tell me that you see things there that you won't see anywhere else.. also, the diversity of working with all different cultures is awesome. on the other note, i hear that Miami has the WORST traffic!

Yeah, I have also heard that a lot of nursing programs are really disorganized. It's good to hear that a lot of students enjoyed their clinicals. I've been told by several practicing nurses that it is very important to do your clinicals in a good hospitals so that you gain a wide variety of experiences. I am working on trying to get financial aid but I am also planning on taking out a loan. I'm 24 and i did my undergrad at the university of Colorado at bouler and I majored in Kinesiology. What about you? Thank you for all of your insight. Its been very helpful.

hey, i pm'ed you!! check your mail:)

Renee, are you local? UM is in the Coral Gables area but yes, traffic in Miami in general seems horrible to me! I'm in Broward county so I wanted schools closer to home and the cost put me off. Disorganization seems to be a universal nursing student complaint :)

I just applied to Nova as well, I am just wondering how hard is it to get in to the BSN entry program if any one has been accepted? I have a 3.25 I dunno if that is good enough but we will see! Nursing programs are way to hard to get into anymore. All they care about is your GPA which is dumb because half the people i have met that get in are all stuck up and mean and the ones who have the lower GPAs are the ones that would make a better nurse. But that is just the people I have met throughout the years. I think that nuring programs should focus on the sciences GPA because in that department i have a 3.7.

There was an article on the nursing program at University of Miami on the miami herald not to long ago. The article stated "many students were caught cheating during the NCLEX." You might want to search for it. I think this might be the reason the NCLEX is low :)

I heard the nursing program at UM lost their accreditation from the NLNAC.

Here's the link to the list of accredited nursing schools in Florida. UM is not on it. http://nlnac.com/Forms/directorySearch.asp
