Hello everyone. I am new to this site... I just recently graduated and passed my NCLEX. I was just offered a position as a GN at florida hospital. I got an email from HR stating that I have to do a new hire physcial.. this will be my first job in the hospital . I know that they have a drug & tabacco free campus which I am a non smoker non drug user even prescription; but I wanted to know what exactly should I expect during this appointment for my new hire physcial with florida hospital??? I have my immunization records showing my titers.. I am excited but also nervous cause this is my first job offer as a RN. Also do they draw blood for the tabacco and drug screening.. AGAIN not a druggie or smoker but I hate having my own blood drawn I normally begin to feel faint when I have my blood drawn...

From what you wrote, sounds like you ALREADY know what to expect of a pre-employment physical. Actual physical exam, blood/urine testing.
Don't have anything to hide, don't have anything to worry about :)
Well thanks but I wanted to know what type of physical.. do I have to pick up patients, weights ,etc.?
And also while in school and during clinical rotations blood draws was easy to perform on other patients but for some reason every since I can remember I feel really faint when I have my own blood drawn.. this is the main reason I mention about having blood drawn during this new hire physical and that I already had my titers done (while in nursing school).
Thanks for your answer.
Ah, ok. Well, that will largely depend on the facility request, and the practitioner performing the exam. You certainly would NOT be asked to pick up an actual patient (ACK!--liability, anyone??) but while in the exam facility you might be asked to pick up weights, or lift, or move weighted objects in a wheelchair, etc. No one can really tell you EXACTLY what you might or might not have to do, as it will vary from facility to facility.
I have been asked to do all of the above for one job, none of it for another....and both were RN jobs.
So....good luck!
Thanks that was helpful I am willing to demonstrate any skill to prove I can do the job. On a side note can I ask if I would get better with having my own blood drawn as I gain more experience as a RN;)
Nope. I'm really good at sticking needles into other people, REALLY good at it actually, but really HATE having it done to me! Experience in getting YOURSELF stuck, LOL, is about the only thing that's gonna help you with that :)
Thanks a million you have relieved my anxiety cause if they do perform any kind of blood work I don't have to worry that the facility is going to look at me crazy when I become faint and think I cannot perform my job duties as a RN:yes:. Again thank you RNsRWE because you totally answered all my questions
You're welcome. And if they look at you funny it's because they haven't had anyone faint in awhile, LOL, not because you're an RN who gets the willies at having needles stuck into her :)
Good luck!

Hello,
i was was wondering if you found an answer to this. I am terrified of needles and heard the drug test is a blood test? Is this correct . I was hoping I would just have to pee in a cup lol.
