Hi All,
I am about to take on my first travel assignment in February. I'm choosing Texas as a destination. I was thinking San Antonio, but know nothing about Texas. Could anyone advise me on neighborhoods in San Antonio or other towns in Texas. I'm pretty nervous about my first assignment - any help would be appreciated.

Go to:
http://www.city-data.com/forum/
city-data.com has stats on the city (demographics, avg. salary, housing etc). Going to the forums has discussions on the city and people do talk about neighborhoods, crime, schools, housing, nightlife, etc.

I have decided to travel in the spring and it will be my first time also. I spent approximately two years on and off researching the pros and cons of travel nursing, the companies, taxes etc., before I thought I would be able to travel. I will be going South to the Carolinas as a first assignment. The places I used to research were Pantravelers, Highway Hypodermics and Delphi Forums just to name a few. Pantravelers is the organization for traveling nurses filled with information. Highway Hypodermics surveys travel nurses and at the end of the year, rates all the companies based on the nurses opinions who have actually worked for the companies. Delphi Forums is an actual site were the nurses discuss their experiences and recommendations. I am positive nurses on Delphi Forums have discussed travel nursing in Texas. The other reader recommended citydata forum to you. She is right! It is a great site to pull information about a city! I hope this helps you. Good luck to you and keep us posted as to how it is going for you. Best wishes!!
Thank you so much for the research sites. I too have been researching for a few years and I "think" I am finally ready. Some of the sites you've mentioned are new to me and I will certainly check them out. I live in MA and the last snow storm made me think TX... Now I am reconsidering my original plan of staying driving distance from home for my first assignment until I get a little experience under my belt. What made you choose the Carolinas and where are you from? I will certainly update you on my adventure and hope you will do the same. Good luck on your assignment.

I think you are making a wise decision to accept an assignment close to home for a first time traveler. I chose the Carolinas specfically North Carolina because my family resides in NC. I chose the spring because I want to be at the beach or as close to it as I possibly can be! I know NC and SC do not pay as much as others, but I am doing this for me and will venture out as I become more experienced with traveling as a nurse. I am from PA and worked with travelers at my hospital and they all said the same thing..."Travel with someone or stay as close to home your first time traveling because it can be lonely". I am taking their advise and staying close to family. One day I will venture to Hawaii, CA and other places but it has to be warm or at least be in the springtime. NO SNOW:clown:!! If you go to Delphi Forums, I forgot to tell you to chose the subcategory of health and wellness. The travel nurse section is listed in this category. Stay in touch!
