Hello fellow nursing students...school starts n two weeks and I'm new to this. I'm excited but sooo scared. The stories of the ppl who start and don't finish are terrifying. I'm trying to remain positive because I know doubt will only increase my chances of failure. Please nursing students I need some positive words after all the negative things I've heard!

I am thinking the same way as you after reading all the negative posts. I am terrified of failing, not knowing enough, not making it, etc... I start my first semester in the nursing program in 20 days.
My classes start in 14 days!!!!!!! I was told that by January only half of the students will remain! That's devastating! I know That its a competitive field but I didn't expect to hear so many negative responses when I tell ppl my major! Really discouraging
My mother is a nurse, my aunt is a nurse, my friend has one semester left in the program. If they can do it, along with thousands of other people, why can't I? I am terrified but this is something I really want. I am willing to put in whatever time it may take, failure is not an option.

I'm also starting in September, and I'm starting to get jitters and butterflies already!! I've been waiting for this moment since I was very young. It's hard not to let a great felling (such as the thought of us eventually becoming future nurses) get destroyed by all these negative posts and other people's "opinions" on nursing and how "hard" it is, etc. When you really look at it, you realize: many people drop out/flunk out of nursing school because they are too young, immature, and do not know the definition of "hard work". Some think they can be lazy and party throughout school, and get a "decent" grade, and it'll be okay.... but in the end it wasn't enough. I know this is subjective and everyone's story is different, but I keep being told again and again that if you have the passion, time and dedication to your studies and really want this, you will get it. I know it sounds cliche, but in nursing school, you have to work hard - and as long as you let yourself grow and succeed as a person, you can do anything!
I had horrible grades in high school. Why? Because I skipped school, didn't do my homework and didn't care. Once I started college (5 years later), I matured as a person, and really understood what it really means to "work hard for what you want". I studied my ass off every day, and got a great GPA. Thanks to those grades, I was able to get into a top-notch nursing program.
So, that being said, I KNOW I will do well - because I will work hard, and it will pay off.

Best of luck everyone!
My best advice: remain dedicated to the program. Make this your life. Study hard, get a good study group together, devote a lot of time in lab practicing your skills for evals....remember, if you have a question, ASK. NEVER assume!
You can do this! Just make sure you dedicate your time to this! It is not easy but if you take this seriously, you will do great!

I'm going into my 3rd semester of nursing school and I find it to be very rewarding. Each semester that I pass makes me feel that much more accomplished. I'm in the part time program (night) so I will be in school for 8 semesters (6 more to go) woohoo. When I first started I was very discouraged as well by all the negative comments I was reading, but my theory is, IF YOU WANT IT YOU CAN HAVE IT!! I dedicate much of my free time to my nursing studies. I have four children, but as soon as they lay down at night, I hit the books right away. You always have to stay on top of the tremendous amount of readings. This will help you in class. As for lab skills, make sure you have the time to practice them. Practice makes perfect. I love nursing school even though I used to be an A student, I'm now a B student. That's okay with me though because I'm trying my hardest and thus far have been able to stay in. In our class we have only lost 4 students in 2 semesters. We started with 32. You can do whatever it is that you put your mind too. Don't listen to all the negativity you are setting yourself up for failure if you do this. Hang in there and you will be just fine. Good luck!!!

I have been nervous all week....I start my ADN nursing program in 5 days! I have organized a 'library' for myself in my dining room, established a schedule for class/studying/exercise/and a tiny amount of a social life, read almost every website about nursing school, and purchased all the school supplies I could find at Office Max. Nothing is making me feel prepared!
My mom used to teach nursing at a private college in the area, but even that doesn't help me get a picture of what my life will be like for the next 2 years. It is such a strange feeling to know that I am going to be with my classmates, 40 students, doing something so totally different than I have ever experienced in college.
Even though I am nervous about the new beginning and enjoying my last few days of leisure, I am so excited to begin. My fellow classmates and everyone on this board who is also just beginning are in for a rollercoaster ride. I hope that we are all able to find support here throughout.
Good luck to everyone!
Thanks to all for the encouraging words! I needed them! I will be going shopping soon for all my supplies..super excited!!!!!Thanks again and good luck to all students who are striving for a goal
