First Semester in Nursing school

Published

This is my first semester in the nursing program and it is so much more challenging that I ever expected. I have always been a student that is able to study the night before and get good grades on the test. I have been trying to improve my study skills because it is clear that one night of studying is not going to help me out in the long run. Even when I do study in advance and feel like I understand the information, I have trouble applying the information on quizzes and exams. What are some of your tips for studying? How do you approach questions on exams with multiple right answers?

Specializes in critical care.

This is often the biggest struggle in nursing programs and takes a long time to get used to. My first advice to you is to let go of the expectation of As. Every nursing student is used to As and it feels incredibly disappointing to try so hard and not get them. But this is NORMAL.

Next - consider the nursing process.

In that order, consider maslow's hierarchy. Do you need to promote safety? Physiological needs? Remember CAB.

You aren't just finding the "rightest of right". You're learning prioritization, a skill that will take years to develop.

Another thing to try is to look at each answer as true/false to help narrow down choices.

Be gentle in your expectations. Know that these tests are measuring your ability to pass the tests. The most important thing is knowing you know the material.

Love this! ^

try recording your lectures and listening to them to/from school, and relaxing at home. I had two recorders, one for each class i was in so that i could better separate the material. learn to abc/maslow.. if you dont know what that is,, talk to your teacher in her office.

get your a basic nclex book and find some nclex questions./flashcards free online that go along with the topics your currently studying.

You need to study daily, and all day the day before test.
