My first position was in palliative care and hospice. I actually think that inpatient palliative care was a great transition from student to actual practice. The discussions involved in palliative care take a great deal of medical knowledge, and having time to review charts, speak one-on-one with specialists, and working with a great collaborating MD served me well as a new NP. I have also been working a part time position in primary care which keeps me current and marketable.
I'd say go for it.

I was curious how people felt about getting a first job in hospice. The job market is miserable and though I'd love to work in primary care, without moving and a lot of effort those jobs are near impossible in my area. I may have to opportunity to work hospice doing admissions as an NP which I would enjoy, but I'm worried it might limit future employment opportunities because it's hospice. Is that a valid concern?
