First Job With Nursing Administrator, MSN Degree

I have just got my BSN back in December and have started working at a local hospital in the Emergency Room. I am considering starting on my MSN with a focus in Nursing Administration. I have found an accerlated program that would allow me to graduate in May of 2014. My concern is what kind of job could I get with my MSN and about a year and a half of nursing experience? Eventually I want to be a Director of Nursing, but I am not sure what kind of positions are between. If anyone has any idea about what kind of job I could expect to get the help would be greatly appreciated.

I think it would be feasible to start off in administration/management of a clinic or long term care facility and work your way up to a hospital admin position. I know someone who started as a DON of a nursing home straight out of nursing school with no experience, just a BSN.

In acute care environments, an MSN is 'necessary but not sufficient' for a management role. In addition to your MSN, you'll need clinical experience that is relevant to the job in question. This is a must for JC compliance. Specialty area management jobs will most likely require MSN and certification in that specialty or MSN in that clinical specialty. Some LTC organizations may require NH admin license for leadership positions - just an MSN is not enough.

So - if you plan on moving into nursing leadership, you need to acquire the right type of experience as well as that MSN. Talk to your nurse manager & Chief Nurse Officer about your goals. They may be able to provide you with the right career opportunities to begin moving on the career ladder.
