First job as a nurse; proud but nervous!

Published

The title says it all. I'm new here to allnurses, brand new to nursing, & proud as heck to have been offered my first job as an RN. (very humbled and thankful, too, as I realize it is hard to find ANY job right now).

So the kicker is, I'm scared like heck, too! Here comes the reality of responsibility.

"New-grad-in-a-month" seeking encouragement here. I know the 'real' learning starts after school...just feeling the enormity of being a nurse...!

Thanks.

Thanks Cameo :) First day down and it went well! It was a full day of orienting to the company, finding out benefits and... *drumroll* getting that pretty little RN badge, haha. Tomorrow will be more orientation, followed by 3 days of computer training! My dept hung a banner for the "newbie sponges" - so nice to feel welcomed! I look forward to hearing how your first day goes as well!!!

Congrats guys! I'm a new grad as well and just accepted my RN job offer yesterday!! I don't start until Aug 22nd b/c they are starting 20 new grads at the same time. I got a job on the med/surg floor of our hospital. I'm so excited, proud, nervous and anxious all at the same time!

Congrat guys on your new jobs! Here's a bit of unsolicited advice that was giving to me by my first boss: when you make a mistake. Own up to it. Then. Not later. Own up and correct it or get help correcting it. Then modify your behavior appropriately so it doesn't happen again. Don't try to hide it.

My boss was one who preferred you come directly to her if you made a mistake and let her know a) a mistake had been made and b) what was being done to correct it. 98% of the time she jumped in and helped and taught. Her biggest pet peeve was when someone made a mistake and then either tried to cover it up or fix it by themselves. She said 9 times out of 10 they had made it into a bigger headache than would have been avoided if they just came forward.

Cheers to you too!

I'm in Resource (float pool) so I will be floating to Med-Surg/PCUs my first year. After my first year, if all goes well (pleeeease!), I can specialize and start going into ICUs, ED, etc. What will you be doing?
