a first Foley insertion story

I was clinical instructor for a group of first-term nursing students at a local college when the opportunity arose for one student to insert her first male Foley. We gathered the supplies and, outside the room, reviewed the procedure step-by-step to be sure she'd appear confident and skilled before the patient. She described opening the kit, removing drapes, placing drapes appropriately, donning gloves, etc. Then she reached the part where she opened the antiseptic, adding "Then I put it on the balls." My face must have shown my shock at this statement because she quickly added, "The cotton balls!"

thats great! lol

I had a classmate that was simply, OUT THERE (as in 4th dimension).

So one day, she gets a very agitated and combative pt to do an in-and-out

foley on. There's 5 of us + intructor in the room. 2 of us are holding the pt's

arm and leg, the other 2 doing the same on the other side. The pt, of course,

gets even more agitated.

The intructor goes over each step but the girl's just staring back blankly.

She opens the package and starts preparing the necessary equipment, but

takes her own sweet time. Meanwhiles, many of us are getting spitted on or

punched or kicked by the pt, and we are all sweating and running out of energy.

Irritated, the intructor helps her set up some of the stuff, and finally tells her,

"now, put on your sterile gloves. But remember, they are sterile. You do remember

the technique of putting on sterile gloves, right?"

The student nods yes, and proceeds to very gently and carefully grab one of the sterile

gloves from the edge of the middle finger, FROM THE OUTSIDE!!!!

We all sigh by that point. And I'm sorry, but I had to walk out of the room

when the intructor told the girl to bring a new package of foley and start all over again.
