I know I have yet to start my orientation in the LTC, but I was curious about how it works out. Do you start passing meds on the first day itself or do you get to shadow an RN and see how the shift works? I mean LTC can be overwhelming with 30 pts and being a new grad, I am just a big mess right now; anticipating my nights shifts ahead. I have read nurses first day experiences but I have yet to experience one of my own. I wish I knew it all but life doesn't work out that way....you have to crawl and fall before you start to walk
I don't do good with these phases (being anxious kills me!) but I guess being hard on myself to learn and beat this phase works too.
I got two weeks orientation as new grad BSN at my LTC place. Now 5 weeks later of being all on my own they tell me I am not "getting it" and sent me home today. NO med errors, no pt probs, documentation is perfect, residents and staff love me, it's not my personality, no abscences, no late, and I pass my meds on time. I had one really bad day yesterday, had to ask a lot of questions because had many new and different things happen, adn today they send me home at begin of my shift. I am so done with nursing. Im supposed to be called next week sometime to go in and talk with supervisor. Oh, we don't have a DON but we do have medicare patients and get paid somehow. No DON ever, nope. I feel so stupid.
OMG! Seriously, elprup? I hope things would also get better for me. I'm nearing my 3rd month in this job and still trying to get the hang of things. I had no med errors so far and hopefully not in the coming years. Residents love me, I don't know about the staff. I try to get along with them as much as I could possibly be. Good Luck to you and hopefully, you could get a new job in this tough economy. Walk with pride, if they fire you, oh well, it's their loss.

Cubuana - What would you think if you were pulled off the floor at beginning of your shift, and told "we don't think you are cut out for LTC, and are sending you home", but otherwise you are great? I got a call a few days later like everything was ok, they wanted me to come back and would give me more orientation, which I knew would not happen. It felt totally wierd, like it was a game and they wanted to know how badly I wanted this job. I said no.
Thanks for the encouragement and best of luck to you, it's ridculously crazy out there.
