First day of nursing school

Published

I am writing this for those of us that fret about the unknown.

Today was my first day of LVN nursing school. Our school has a rule that anyone even one second late does not get into the classroom, so a lot of us were very early. I was 40 minutes early and there were five other students ahead of me. A couple of students came in a little late, but I think they were docked.

The classroom was open so we came in and picked our seats. The woman next to me told me she hardly slept at all the night before, and that remark was reiterated by everyone close by. She said she had a dream that she was in a hospital with a disease that no one knew about. She attributed it to a fear of failure to become a nurse.

At the proper time we were introduced to our five teachers and their subjects. Then the head teacher passed out paperwork for us to fill out, (I have never filled out so much paperwork as for LVN school). Then the student handbook was passed out and the whole class (60 of us) took turns reading about the rules, regulations and school Mission Statement. It was made clear to us that the school set high standards and expected nothing but the best from its students.

We were then informed that we would be giving each other bed baths, NG tubes, and foley catheters, in addition to shots. I know I will not be involved in having a foley or a NG tube, but the rest I can live with. If students don't want to commit to a certain proceedure, its not mandatory, however, the students that volunteer for those activities will be the first to do them in clinicals.

The syllabus was not available so we were given our first assignments by our respective teachers. This program is seven hours a day, five days a week. We were told that for every hour of class time we were to have three hours of homework. That equals a 28 hour day not counting everything else besides school. They say we will have time to catch up on weekends. I guess that means I won't be posting as often as I have been lately, lol.

Uniforms were passed out, but we won't be using them for the first eight weeks. Thats when we start our clinical rotations. We were told that we would be working some evenings and some weekends. Oh well, I don't have a life anyway:o

I hope this helps some of you who are wondering what the first day is like. It must vary from school to school. Tonight I will try to catch up on the sleep I didn't get last night because I was sooo nervous about the first day of school. Well, at least I will try to catch up after I do some homework.

Good luck to you all.

Congratulations! I enjoyed reading your posts and have been checking back to read about your passing the test. I hope you find a job that is a good fit for you.

Thanks Visiting.

Yesterday I went to an agency to talk to them about a job. They gave me paperwork fill out and even a drug test. They checked to see if my CPR card was current and told me that they even have classes in CPR when I need to renew it. They are also doing a background check. I've never had so many background checks in my life!

I showed them a copy of the paperwork which showed I passed the NCLEX, and they copied that information as well. They had a short test on OSHA standards and one on JAHCO standards and before they do an orientation, they give another test based on one of those. Same questions, just mixed up and easy.

After reading about going to agencies right after graduating, I don't know that that is what I want, just want to check things out. The local hospital actually hires LVN's, but not at the moment......

Sure feels good to have school done with and my license on the way.:yeah:

Hi, I love this site. My class starts Jan.5, I am really nervous. I have 5 children and my youngest is 3,and my only daughter. I have been a stay at home mom for many years. I hope I can do this.

Congratulations tnlpnstudent!!!

I know you are looking forward to going to school and it must be long wait until January...

You have a lot of great experiences in store for you. Some are going to be wonderful, others tough or unexpected. All will be a gateway to the new career you've chosen.

Please keep in mind that it is intensive at times, and you will run the gamut of emotions. Hang in there and plug away at that endless homework. Eventually its over, and the end comes quickly. LOL, I mean the homework.

I hope you post from time to time and let us know how you are doing.

When I first came on this site I posted saying that I was happy to be here, felt welcome, and wanted to be a nurse and part of this group. Someone replied that because I was here, I was already a nurse, just didn't have my license yet. So, welcome to the group new nurse!

Good luck!:prdnrs:

Thank you very much, It has been a long wait. I am very happy you posted a response. I will let you know how the first day goes.

I am starting in april, and I am also very thankful for this thread! I can't wait!

Hello LuckyKellyK, and congratulations on starting in April!:grpwlcm:

You know, nursing school was hard, but I envy the experience you'll be going through. It's like being introduced into another world with its own set of rules. I am very happy for you both!

:up:Congratulations!! Thank you for starting this thread. It was so interesting and helpful!

I was just looking at a site that has all the scrubs and medical equipment, and am still in shock about being accepted. The waiting list is very long around this area, as I found out when I went to

orientation. We had 3 students not show up, so the door was locked and the positions were filled with alternates right then. The first day for me is on January 5, I am very excited and very nervous.:chair:.

Thats so cool!!!!

I know how you feel. After taking the test to get in and the interviewing process I was incredulous they chose me. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, so to speak.

Maybe you and others can add to this thread and share your experiences. I'm sure thoughts will occur to you, and different experiences. It would be nice to have new perspectives on the journey through nursing school.

You know, I just finished my first week of work and I am doing well, but if my instructors came in and watched me I think I'd be just as nervous as when I was in school. It was the best of times, it was the.................

Thank you lvnhopeful....I really enjoyed reading about your first day. I am excited about my first day...I have a month till I start. Keep us informed. Conrats on finishing your first day...sounds like your be busy for the next year.

I have to have my physical tomorrow and that includes my shots. I bought the rest of my supplies and am just waiting for Monday Jan. 5th. I can't believe it is almost here. :candle:
