First day of nursing school

Nursing Students General Students

I am writing this for those of us that fret about the unknown.

Today was my first day of LVN nursing school. Our school has a rule that anyone even one second late does not get into the classroom, so a lot of us were very early. I was 40 minutes early and there were five other students ahead of me. A couple of students came in a little late, but I think they were docked.

The classroom was open so we came in and picked our seats. The woman next to me told me she hardly slept at all the night before, and that remark was reiterated by everyone close by. She said she had a dream that she was in a hospital with a disease that no one knew about. She attributed it to a fear of failure to become a nurse.

At the proper time we were introduced to our five teachers and their subjects. Then the head teacher passed out paperwork for us to fill out, (I have never filled out so much paperwork as for LVN school). Then the student handbook was passed out and the whole class (60 of us) took turns reading about the rules, regulations and school Mission Statement. It was made clear to us that the school set high standards and expected nothing but the best from its students.

We were then informed that we would be giving each other bed baths, NG tubes, and foley catheters, in addition to shots. I know I will not be involved in having a foley or a NG tube, but the rest I can live with. If students don't want to commit to a certain proceedure, its not mandatory, however, the students that volunteer for those activities will be the first to do them in clinicals.

The syllabus was not available so we were given our first assignments by our respective teachers. This program is seven hours a day, five days a week. We were told that for every hour of class time we were to have three hours of homework. That equals a 28 hour day not counting everything else besides school. They say we will have time to catch up on weekends. I guess that means I won't be posting as often as I have been lately, lol.

Uniforms were passed out, but we won't be using them for the first eight weeks. Thats when we start our clinical rotations. We were told that we would be working some evenings and some weekends. Oh well, I don't have a life anyway:o

I hope this helps some of you who are wondering what the first day is like. It must vary from school to school. Tonight I will try to catch up on the sleep I didn't get last night because I was sooo nervous about the first day of school. Well, at least I will try to catch up after I do some homework.

Good luck to you all.

I am really suprised to hear that some schools are having students do procedures on each other. Our school refused to do that because of liability issues and such. That just seems so strange to me.

I am in my first semester and I have three classes. Dosage Calculations was half a semester, and we have nursing theory ((which has a lecture and a clinical portion)) and health asssessment. That is it.

Thats interesting Reznicekk. A lot of the students were wishing they didn't have to work on each other. It was shocking when we found out we would have to do IV certification techniques on each other. On the other hand, I'm glad I didn't have to put a patient through that. Some people are more adept than others when it comes to finding a vein. Sometimes I just looked away.........

During clinicals, I was able to do a foley cath, but only on a male. I was hoping to do at least one on a female. Did get to do a suprapubic though. Guess it all works out in the end:)

Of course each procedure was preceeded by a little terror on my part, but I lived through it all, lol.

Have fun in school!

The skills lab at our school allows us to do all of those skills on our computerized dummies. So luckily we dont have to do a single thing on each other. I would go crazy if we did.

Suzanne4 answered my question about whether or not I could get a license by driving up to Sacramento, I have her answer below. Bummer!

"Not sure if you understand how things are done with the LVN license in CA or not. You will not get your results for almost a month if not longer, and if you pass, then you will be given a bill to pay for the license. That is when they will send out your information to have the actual hard license created for you. You will be able to see your license number on their site once the number has been issued to you. But it will be sent directly to you and not from the office in Sacramento."

So, all I can do now is wait for my license, but at least I can show them the letter that was sent to me and I have prove that I passed!

:yeah:

Trust, none of us went crazy, but it was very tense, especially when the head instructor said we would be foley catherizing each other. We didn't do that, thank god, but there was a lot of mumbling and grumbling in the ranks. Maybe thats why we did everything else. What a relief to escape that catheter!!!! LOL.

I think maybe the instructor has a sadistic streak:)

congrats!!!

Well, congratulations! The wait is finally over.

Just click on the Admin Help Desk link at the bottom of any page, open up a new thread and explain that you want to change your screen name and one of the allnurses staff will help you you do that.

TxNursing Student, congratulations on starting nursing school next year. The most important thing to remember, among all the numerous things to remember, is to not give up. There were times when I thought it would never end, that I couldn't do the work, that our instructors were crazy, that I couldn't afford school and books and such, that the nursing staff where we did our clinicals was the meanest bunch of......... well, you get the idea:)

Hang on to your hat, its a bumpy ride, but the finish is just as thrilling:yeah:

lvnhopeful,

This was a very inspiring thread. I wish you all the best in your nursing career! Yeah, change your name...you have arrived! :nurse:

CONGRATULATIONS!! YOU DID IT!!! I hope I get an acceptance letter in the mail soon so that I can be in your shoes one day.

Just keep working towards your goal shord and you will:)

When you do, post it so we can all say congratulations. Its quite an acheivement and I'm proud of it.
