First day on Behavioral Health Unit

Specialties Psychiatric

Hi

Tommorow is my first day on the behavioral health unit as my new job. My previous experience in psych was one rotation during nursing school that I don't remember to well. I was wondering if there was any advice that the more experienced nurses could give me. Are there some things I should make sure I do or anything I should avoid. Also, are there any books that I can get to help me along? I ordered a psychiatric care plan book off the internet but maybe there is better guide I can get.

Specializes in Psychiatric Mental Health.

I agree with the other suggestions.....

Also, if there is a unit handbook READ it...

The best way to keep the manipulation/staff splitting down is to have a staff that all follow the same rules...

And find the seasoned staff and learn from them (don't forget the techs!!!)

My first psych nursing job I learned so much from this one psych tech who had been doing it like 15 years...

Specializes in psych, addictions, hospice, education.

During your beginning days, keep your eyes open to see who you would like to have as a mentor. Then continue to watch what he or she does, and ask for tips. You'll see some you think do a great job and some that aren't so great. Pick a great one, and learn from the best....

Techs are such great teachers in psych. They often know the patients much better than the nurses do. Make them your allies, and ask for their input. Help them feel valued. Ask them about the patients and the staff. They know alot that will help you.
