Hello everyone...well, I am working at my first agency job this week. I am a little nervous but excited at the same time. I am starting out at another local hospital that uses the same docs that my hospital does so that at least I have some sense of familiarity to start (plus my husband is taking my car for the weekend and I don't trust our other car to get me anywhere out of town). I will be working in critical care. Does anyone have a good starting out tips for someone who is just starting the whole agency/per diem realm of nursing? Thanks!!

Good luck to you for taking the first step. Most of the time the charge nurse will ask you what type of patients that you usually have cared for or have experience with. I doubt if they would give you a patient with a balloon pump or two ventriculostomies the first day......................Just always keep your eyes open and consider it a new learning experience and remember to have fun. You will see many familiar faces in the docs and probably some of the nurses............................
Let us know how it goes................... :balloons:
Thanks for the reply suzanne...I am sure that it will go well...thanks for the good thoughts...

Just wanted to let you know that I have been an agency nurse for 10 years. I love it. I have worked for NI healthcare, StarMed and Intelistaf. I like Intelistaf the best. Very friendly and the pay is great. Good luck!!!!:)
Well I was all ready to go in...but I got cancelled.
I had a feeling that I would...I suppose that getting cancelled is just part of it...when I start going farther away, I hope it dosen't happen too frequently. Thanks for all of the nice thoughts, I am excited (but nervous) about doing agency...I think that it will really help boaden my nursing skills and current practice...

I've been an agency nurse for almost as long as I've been a nurse. (20 yrs)
One thing I know is that I remember no matter what unit/what hospital, If I have my Kardex, Mars, Med cabinet, charts, and supply rooms, then rest will take care of itself!
Welcome to the fun of NOT KNOWING if your working or not for a day, and remember that summer is sometimes a slim season for alot of places so try and be as versatile as possible and do shifts early in the pay week, so your not sweating it out at the last couple of days.
