firefighting/emt and nursing?

Published

Hi everyone,

I just made an account on this website and am not too sure quite how it works yet so I apologize for any mistakes in this post! I’m 18 years old and currently browsing my career options. I want to become a registered nurse, but I’m also highly interested in firefighting/emt work. have any of you heard of the possibility of doing both jobs? Or do any of you recommend doing one before the other, such as doing fire/emt before/during nursing school? I am currently in the process of upgrading my highschool courses so I can apply to nursing school to get my BSN. I want to work as a nurse full time and maybe fire/emt part time, if that’s even possible? (I think, none of my ideas here are set in stone as I have little experience in either field other than high interest). I tried posting to reddit and got some replies but I felt maybe people on here may know more about this topic. any insight is very appreciated!

I'm an ER nurse and I still run as a volunteer EMT for my local rescue squad. I enjoy getting to go out in the field still, and the squads that come into my ED respect that I still run. Lot's of our nurses started as paramedics and then transitioned to nursing because of $$. Nursing pays a lot more and has better benefits, hours and career advancement.

I recommend you check out your local rescue squad for junior membership and maybe get your EMT now. Find out first hand what running rescue is all about.

After doing some research I think that’s the plan. I’m going to try to get my EMT after finishing my prerequisite highschool courses I had missed, work for a Summer and then attend nursing school. I want to give fire a shot, but I’m not exactly sure how that process is but I’m sure id figure it out at some point during the emt process! I appreciate the reply ?
