Finished my MBA-HM last week. Ask me anything!

Nursing Students Western Governors

Updated:   Published

Not completely nursing school related, but I have been concurrently enrolled in 's MBA Healthcare Management while working on my MSN/FNP. As of last week, I've completed all requirements and submitted for graduation. It's a great feeling to have the first of two Master's degrees done!

If anyone is interested in this program, feel free to ask me anything. I was enrolled in the "old" MBA program. The new MBA program has replaced many of the papers with exams, and I know nothing about them. I definitely would have rather taken the exams!

How long did it take?

From start to finish, it took me 10 months. I probably could have gone more quickly, but 1) I wouldn't have retained much information, and 2) I was (and still am) also working on my MSN. I wouldn't recommend attempting to go any faster, unless you truly know the material. There is no value in the credential if you have no clue what you're doing when it's all said and done!

Why did you do it, if you're working on becoming an NP?

So many NP's, PA's, physicians, and other healthcare providers have absolutely no idea how to actually run a business -- or at least how to run one efficiently. I wanted to differentiate myself on job applications, particularly when applying to practices that are not managed by a larger healthcare organization.

Additionally, I want to eventually open my own practice after getting a lot of solid clinical experience. I need to have that business foundation in addition to clinical skills to be able to operate a successful practice.

Did your wife hate you for working on two Master's degrees at the same time while you have a new baby to raise?

No, my wife was very supportive and understanding. But, it was (and still is) definitely tough to focus on school while taking care of my awesome baby girl. I figure, why not get school out of the way now, while she's little and won't remember that daddy stared at his laptop all the time? ;)

8 Reasons Not to Get a Business Degree - CBS News

Good article, but I think this is geared more toward undergrad degrees in Business. Some of the points still hold true for the MBA, especially the quality of life issue. However, #2 is debatable (director-level nursing admin in my organization makes $90k+, and CNO's make $120k+), and #3 is not really applicable in healthcare, as you don't yet see many MBA's in healthcare admin.

While the MBA is more of a check-the-box requirement for many non-healthcare admin jobs, it's not so much of a requirement right now for healthcare admin. But, I think we'll see this change soon as healthcare organizations are having to modify operations to account for lowered reimbursement, and will have to function with a greater focus on profitability than they've had to worry about in previous years. I think there will be less utility in MPA and MHA degrees, and more utility in MBA degrees as healthcare reimbursement evolves.

Either way, the combination of an MSN and a Master's in a business discipline certainly can't hurt, so long as you don't break the bank doing so. However, I would advise against getting solely an MSN if the end goal is to advance in administration. I have observed, and have heard from others in the game, that having only an MSN sort of locks you in to nursing, which makes it difficult to move to other C-level jobs outside of CNO.

I am considering the MBA-HM from . I would like to finish within one year. How many hours per day/week did you spend on the coursework in order to finish in the time it took you?

I'm almost done with four classes and I'm less than a month in. I expect to be done within one term (6 months) if life doesn't get in the way. I do spend a LOT of time on coursework, probably at minimum 3-4+ hours/day.

Featherz, you're doing it at ? I got my BSN and MSN from WGU. I want to go for my MBA but I'm a bit worried about getting all my degrees at one school lol. I think they call it academic incest. Anyways, how is it compared to the MSN courses?

Yes, I am. I didn't get an MSN at , however (just a BSN). *IF* I get an MSN, I may get it somewhere else.. However, I am not overly concerned with academic incest as I am doing these degrees more for personal growth.

To be fair, for my first month in the program, I was out on FMLA for the birth of my daughter. I racked up several classes in that first month between sharing the new baby responsibility with my wife. Hey, I wasn't sleeping anyway, so why not capitalize on it?

After that, things slowed down. I would say I spent an average of 20 hours per week actively working on the program after that first month. It also helps that I only work 3 days a week (12-hour shifts), so I had 4 days a week that I could devote to school.

I am over halfway through the MBA - HM now. Murse901, how did you find Capsim? Seems intimidating to me from what I have seen so far (still several classes to go before I get there).

Capsim wasn't intimidating until I got to know my team. Some of my teammates didn't really seem to grasp basic concepts about Capsim that were covered in the introductory material, and one of them admitted to not even reading the introductory material. We failed miserably on the practice rounds.

However, after those practice rounds, we received our debrief from Capsim and they gave us information on our weak areas (of which there were many). On the "real" rounds, it was essentially me and one other person doing the vast majority of the work, and the rest just went along with our decisions. We finished in the 96th percentile.

So, if you're lucky enough to be placed with a good team, you're golden. If not, it'll take a little more work.

tl;dr Group projects suck.

I would really recommend going somewhere else for an MBA.

Wow, that's dedication. What two classes do you have left?

Financial Management (OA), then Data Driven Decision Making (OA and PA). Then Capstone. Passed accounting earlier this week (YAY).
