I am currently one year into my FNP program and need to start looking for preceptors when I begin clinicals Summer 2021. How does one go about looking for preceptors? Is it acceptable to call offices? Send a letter? Drop off resume in person? What is the typical approach. Thank you.

What school are you going to?  Your school should provide you with guidance on this

Butterfly, Unfortunately most schools are no longer offering assistance with finding preceptors, but here are some places to start.

Social networking, talk to every physician, NP, pharmacist, nursing home DON etc you know and ask them to help you.  Offer to pay them if they secure you a preceptor if you think that will help.

Ask your school if they have a list of the current sites near you with an agreement.  Many sites are closing off their new school agreements due to the influx of students and the time it takes the site to set up the agreement.

Be open to paying a fee.  It is becoming more common for preceptors to suddenly have an "opening" once you offer them an honorarium.

Good luck in your search, the struggle is real, but not new and we are all having a hard time since COVID finding preceptors.

I cold called offices, tried using my own personal health care providers and my contacts as a RN at the time.

Out of the cold calls I found a really great PCP, out of my own health care providers I had my Women's Health NP (I was pregnant at the time) agree to it, and out of my contacts I was able to work in an outpatient office.

Good luck to you, it takes some work and time so start now.
