I am trying to find an ambulatory care position, outside of the institutional setting. Urgent care or office type, occupational nurse etc. How does one transition into other areas of nursing?? Most areas seem to require a certification now and are less concerned about the level of degree a nurse has. I have multiple experiences but elected to extend my education instead of become certified in some specialty that would limit my marketability!!! Any advice is welcomed!!! Also, age seems to be a factor, I am 57 and still wanting to learn more from nursing, but it seems the powers that be do not think I will be around long enough to make it worth their while!!! Anyone else having age issues???

I think that the basic problem is that these types of settings really don't have sufficient training resources - so they need to hire staff who already have the right skill set. You could become CEN (emergency dept) certified - even though ENA recommends 2 years of related experience, it is not a requirement to sit for this exam.

I curently work in an Ambulatory Care setting. I was picked up as a new grad (the only place that gave me the chance) and I love it. Most Urgent Care setting welcome RNs from the hospital setting.
Just be aware, the pay rate is lower especially compared to the Acute setting
