Financial Help for Single Moms Getting Ready to Apply

Published

Hi Everyone:

I was just wondering if there are any other single moms out there attempting to apply to nursing school in 2009? I'm asking because I am trying to find every possible way of getting money for my children and I to live off of so I don't have to work while being in the nursing program. Besides financial aid, what other options are there? I cannot get student loans because my credit is bed as I'm divorced and everything was a mess from that. I don't received child support so there isn't even any additional money from that end to help. As it is, I have to figure out what I'm going to do for health insurance as I carry it now with my employer but my daughter has a chronic illness of which she's on chemo and streroid drugs for. Any suggestions?

Thanks!:D

You might want to call the school that you are interested in going to. They might have programs that are centered around single parents. My mother was in a special program for single parents while she was in LPN school. Daycare, living expenses, etc were paid for while she went to school. I think it was a program either through the school or through the state to help women get off of welfare.

You may also be surprised as to what you can do about the student loan situation. Your credit might be better than you think and student loans are easier to come by than I thought when I started. My credit stinks and I got one.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

hi everyone:

i recently took out a stafford loan. my credit is nothing to be desired, for almost same reason as you. stafford loans do not do a credit check. i received enough to where i will be able to pay some of my regular bills while working very minimal hours. talk to your financial aid counslor, as this would probably be a great option for you if you have exhausted all other grant possiblities.

good luck from a fellow single mommy :yeah:

Thanks for the suggestion. I looked into that and it would help some, but not a lot. Until I quit work, my income is too great to qualify when one looks at the numbers on paper. I'll keep my fingers crossed! Good luck to you, as well!

Maybe you'll have to get on public assistance as a last resort? I know people look down on others doing that- I know I wouldn't want to do it myself. But you will be different from the ones riding the system because you are using it for what it was meant for, as a stepping stone or temporary situation.

Is there NO way you can get child support?

Hey I am single mom with a BA, and bad credit. Other than a stafford loan I think I'll be on my own. I'll have to quit my nice paying insurance job if I get into nursing school. Maybe work part time as a cna. When my income changes I will then qualify for daycare assitance (which I am over income for now) State Health Insurance for my son for free(which I actually heard was excellent), possibly for me depending on the pay scale for CNAs in my state and possibly food stamps. I don't want to do it, but I will.

Additionally I am saving my tax return, a few dollars here and there and I will cash out my 401k which is not a lot. I also traded in my expensive gas gusseling, high insurance, high car payment, suv for a 13 year old compact car. During the summers I will be a work aholic also.

As for child support I think I had a lucky break, my son's father who actually moved to avoid being served, has a big mouth and one of my friends over heard him talking about a lawsuit he has pending for a car accident. She took down the name of his lawyer and hopefully now I'll have support one day soon. lol.

Anywho I am rambling now. Those are just some ideas. Good luck
