Financial Aid...student Loans..help

Published

I am getting ready to quit my job in December and go to nursing school. Currently I make too much money to receive pell grants, but I talked to the school today and they said that as long as I can bring in proof that I am unemployed they can go in and put it some extraordinary circumstances and I will be eligible for financial aid.

My husband will not be working, maybe part time as he finishes up flight training. We have saved for the time when we can quit to pursue school and we will be ok until he gets done.

My question is because i am married with no children, however, we will be unemployed... do you think i will still receivea full pell grant? I am definately going to need the money for scrubs, books, etc.

Next... loans... I am sure it will come to this and I would rather take out loans for my education than be stressed out about money, I know we will be able to pay them back when we are done.

If my school is paid for by scholarships and pell grants, can i still apply for a stafford loan for other expenses or do they only go by tuition needs from the school? Or do they just give you the maximum amount that you can take per year? I am a little confused on this whole ordeal... as you can tell I am new at the financial aid and loans!

Any tips you can give me would be sooooo appreciated.

I CAN'T WAIT!! YAY:D

There are so many problems in our world right now that I find it a waste of energy to argue about something so trivial as money....especially on the internet.

Good luck to the OP.

TFam,

Pell is determined by what you report on your FAFSA and upon verification of that information. If you are not working for whatever reason and your husband is not working, you would likely qualify. Only the school can truly determine if you qualify or not. Do what you think is best. Everyone have their limits. I am assuming that it would be difficult for you to work and enroll in the nursing program at the same time. We all know that nursing is very demanding. Only you know your limit. Do not let anyone make you feel guilty about your choice not to work. I work full time while attending school, but I cannot judge someone who cannot or is not doing the same. You may qualify for government loans with a low fix rate. I am sure that your school will put together a decent package for you. Good luch

It is not what we say, but how we say it.

You know what....if you qualify for grants, take them!!! That's what they are there for. People need to be able to fund their educations and get through school so they can better their lives. Period. I am a divorced mom of 4. I will and do use every single grant I can find. If that makes me a mooch, then so be it but my school is being paid for so that 2 years from now, I can stand on my own two feet and give my family all the things they deserve. I will no longer be one of "those people" that is blacklisted and deemed a drain on society because I have had a bad run of luck. Forget what people say and do what is best for your family. It really ****** me off to see people making such harsh judgements of people they don't even know. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Until you have walked a mile in the shoes of someone that skips two meals a day so her kids can eat, BACK OFF. Worry about your own life and don't be so quick to judge others who are only trying to make their lives better. Struck a nerve? YES. Noone ever said those grants are only for a certain group of people. They are there for all that choose to utilize them. Good luck OP!

Get over yourself. My only point was that if someone is just decides they don't feel like working *IMO* that isn't a valid reason to take advantage of a program that might really make a difference in someone's life like YOURS.

Who here is qualified to judge whether someone else's reason to not work is "valid? Oh and putting an "IMO" before a statement judging strangers, doesn't mean it's not judging them.

I know that the three schools I applied to strongly recommend that if you must work, you work no more than 10 hours a week while in school. I don't know about you, but I can't live on 10 hours a week worth of pay. So, I guess in spite of the decision of my school's financial aid officers (the folks who are paid to judge who should get pell grants and other federal aid) I'm unjustly stealing away funds from folks more deserving than me by your stated "opinion?"

How do you know that the federal aid won't really make a difference in the OP's life? It's that judging thing again....

Lol and adding *peace* to your ending doesn't mean your post wasn't aggressive.

This is just my opinion which basically is a judgement call even if that upsets you. I definitely am not qualified to make the actual decision and neither is anyone else here so its all about adding our opinions. Truth is if posters only want an affirmation of their choice they should either state that up front or email their Mommy or best girlfriend.

Sorry if you felt my post was aggressive. I just think that a lot of this thread has been less about who should get federal aid and more about the judgment of a stranger's decision.

The OP asked about whether folks though she would get federal aid and for any tips to help her obtain that aid, not whether she should. Next time I ask an informational question, I'll be sure to preface the post with a request for folks to refrain from sharing their opinions and judgments about what I should do. ;)

Peace, (I really do mean this)

I think you're the one that needs to be getting over herself. The OP didn't ask for your personal opinion on the morality of her decision. She asked advice from people "in the know" about whether or not she would qualify for aid. There are tons of aid programs out there and more people qualify than just single parents. Working full time and going to school full time is too much for some people. Why add extra stress if it isn't needed? Seriously....some of the people on this board are the most judgemental people I've ever run across. Just because something doesn't work for you doesn't mean it's a sin for someone else to do it. Chill. I thought nursing was supposed to be able helping people and being non-judgemental.

when one gets over oneself, what exactly happens?

And you think this would be ok? These grants are not unlimited. What if a single Mother working for $8 an hour at Walmart can't go to nursing school because someone that could have afforded to finance their own education but didn't want to work used up the funds? IMO deciding to quit working while in nursing school is only an option if you can afford it.

lol...didn't know Walmart paid that much. Sure beats the 7.15 Sears pays :-)

It's not just this board. It's the internet. It's incredibly easy to be nasty to people when you don't have to look them in the face or hear their voice. I like to believe that people who are nasty on the internet are different in real life. If not, please leave me to my delusions. lol! :D
