Finally found my dream, but...

Published

Hi everyone,

I am currently a 22-year-old student at Georgia State University. My final semester of my BA in anthropology will be next semester, and I will be graduating in December. My focus is medical anthropology, and I recently realized that my unspoken passion was nursing, which is something I had been afraid to pursue prior to this.

I have completed both the English and math pre-reqs necessary for nursing school, but unfortunately selected Astronomy as my lab science req before realizing what I wanted to pursue as a career. Following my graduating in December, how should I go about achieving this dream? Should I reapply to GSU for another degree and take all of the science pre-reqs, or is there a better way to go about this? I can't seem to find a clear path that would allow me to start this career.

Thank you so much for your help,

Steph

Once you finish your anthropology classes you can apply for graduation but that doesn't mean you have to graduate. When I got my first BS, I actually stayed on an extra semester. I wanted to take a couple more classes and I had funding. You just have to check with a counselor thar delaying your graduation won't screw you somehow.

Alright, guys, I postponed my graduation and am officially pursuing a dual degree! I'm finished with Anthropology, so I can focus entirely on pre-nursing. I'm thrilled and so excited to begin.

Congrats! Are you going to take your pre reqs at gsu? Cause I am starting this fall and we might be taking a class together.

Thank you!!! I'm ecstatic. And yes, I'll be taking my pre-reqs there. So far, I'm signed up for online Psych and am thinking about taking the Micro class that's still open, but I'm crossing my fingers that someone drops A+P on MW so I can pick it up. I'm still taking some courses to finish up my Anth major in the fall, so we'll see what happens... :) Have you signed up for classes yet?

you need to check constantly, because i always see people dropping classes. I'll be taking A+P 1, Chem 1, English 1 and College Algebra. I'm so excited to begin. We'll be in the same class if you get into Anatomy!

Excellent! That sounds like a perfect course load. I emailed Dr. Ross to check about overflow - they occasionally let people in, so we'll see. Who do you have for English 1? I took Dan Marshall and HIGHLY recommend him.

Oh yeah i know some professors do that if you show how interested you are/how much you need the class. I'm taking robertson for English. btw what do you know about FLC's? Were you in one? I joined the Pre-Nursing 1 FLC so I had all the classes reserved for me already. I liked it because they save the best times for us and apparently give us the best professors. I'm kind of worried that I'll be bored being with the same 25 people.

I was in an FLC... while having class times reserved for you is definitely helpful as a freshman, the GSU 1010 class is worthless and uses up some of your HOPE hours (if you have HOPE). I ended up dropping that class and picking up another instead. I'm not sure if they've done away with that class, but I certainly hope so! As for staying with the same people - your science classes will be huge, so you'll totally have to opportunity to meet people there. I wasn't bored being with the same 25 people in my other classes, because GSU is such a huuuuge place that you'd have to try super hard to NOT meet people, hahah. I think overall it's a good move to join an FLC, especially if it's for pre-nursing. :)
