Filing Without a lawyer

Hi I'd like to hear from anyone who filed for their greencard by themselves. one of my friends is encouraging me to do so as he knows people who've done it themsleves. I've looked at the 1-140 and it doesn't look to complicated, also, my employer hires tons of foreign nurses so i imagine they know what other documentation i need from them. I know it might be easier to hire a lawyer but the ones i've talked to are asking for an average of $ 4600 including filing fees. I have huge monetary commitments that i don't think i can afford the $ 4600.

My Situation so far is::

I've passed NCLEX,

I've applied for Visa Screen and i'm waiting for it.

Please tell me of your experiences with the filing process and if you think it's nuts to want to file by myself.

I did it all without a lawyer or any other help. I just filled out the paperwork and did everything the US immigration required me to do. I got the greencard without any problems and now I am a US citizen. I did that also all alone as soon I was eligible to do it. I never run into a problem. You just have to be confident and know what you want.

hi daning.....are you under contract with an agency?

Nope. I'm a direct hire. That could be a factor why there's no external pressure to get a lawyer. But I also know some nurses who are under contract with an agency who never used a lawyer.

However, I've read some posts in and out of this forum about agencies insisting that their recruits get an aid of a lawyer in the US at the agency's expense. And these lawyers charge thousands of dollars per client. Guess what? this is added overhead cost and where else will the charge it (as ROI) in the long run?

...then you hear all these horror stories with agencies. :angryfire
