At my last two ED jobs, there would sometimes be blocks of time with patients... some people would actually lay down on a gurney. I was OK laying my head on the desk and cat-napping. It was almost impossible not to.
At my present job, we're so busy all night that it's easy to stave off the nod-offs.
Sleeping when you've got patients to care for, though, is not cool.

OP, I am so sorry that this happend to you. I know of a lot of nurses who fall asleep, but only a handful get "caught".
And mostly those on rotating shifts, who don't work nights as a general rule.
