Feeling nervous and unsure...help!

Published

I have been an LPN for about 1 1/2 years. I have ls 1 , ls 2, transitions and a psych class until i can apply for the cpne. I am getting a little bit nervous because I have very little IV experience, I have also never been around a hemovac or JP drain. I think if i practice the iv stuff enough, ill be okay...I dealed with several IVs in LPN school and do have my iv certification. I just want to know if JP drains or Hemovacs are common during the cpne? I plan on testing in Mansfield (I have an aunt who works in ICU with a BSN...so I am goingto be staying with her..she lives in ohio! ). What are my chances of getting a peds patient at Mansfield? I am just sooo nervous. Oh and my husband just got orders to go to Germany in may....

All you need to practice for the iv is in the CPNE manual. You are not expected to start IVs - that's way above a student's scope of practice. Print out the IV section from the CPNE manual and read it, all you need to know is there. You may have to change an iv bag to hang an antibiotic, but you may not. Don't stress on the IV section. It's not as complicated as it sounds. As for a hemovac or JP, the manual covers that too. I never saw a drain during the cpne. They are so easy to empty, just empty into the approved receptical, squeeze the drain, and close it. You can review it in a funds book or on the net. Above all, know your Critical Elements! I cannot stress that enough.

Okay you made me feel better! I am freaking out. Thanks

I failed my pcs during the cpne because of a JP drain

Why did you fail? Was it because you had never seen one before? That scares me so much! :(

So sorry Erika :( Frustrating when we don't have contact with some of the things on the floor. I put JP drains in now, but have not maintained them on the floor for over 14 years. :uhoh3: What happened?

When are you testing LS1? I am hoping to possibly this week, then I have LS2, 3 and transitions....When are you hoping to be done McDaniel? Do you have a workshop picked yet?

I am not sure when I will be taking LS1 , sometime in march for sure. I dont know when I hope to be done. I am moving to Germany. Originally from TN. A workshop may or maynot be in my budget at the time. I might just wait a while to take the CPNE. I am planning on going to Mansfield (my aunt is an BSN and is going with me to the CPNE).

have you looked at robs cpne, i bought it , looks good, i am in the same boat, no real experience with iv's. did have lots of jps and hemovacs, but i don't think they are going to ask a new student to know all of that. But that's my biggest fear; encountering the things that lpns don't normally do. A friend of mine put me at ease last weak by telling me she can hook me up with the nurse educator at the hospital who will go over every skill I don't know, or haven't done on real patients or just need to review. Maybe you can contact a nurse educator at a hospital near you. i am doing my transitions and still have 5 more classes to do, but i watch my rob's cpne videos every day and some things on you tube like hawk nurse. But definitely try the Nurse Educator. :clown:
