Feeling a little discouraged today.........

Published

I just came back from having lunch with 3 friends of mine and when I mentioned that I may decide to go into the LVN program next summer instead of the RN program their automatic response was "Do not waste your time in the LVN program! Go straight to RN" I don't have the grades to apply to the RN program this fall so I wasn't going to even try. I'm so discouraged right now................:crying2:

Why let them get you down? I say go for it and apply to the LVN program, it is a step toward the RN. You can get your LVN and then decide later if you want to try and bridge to the RN. You don't have the grades for the RN right now, so in order to become any level of nurse you can try for the LVN. I say go for it! If you really want to become a nurse you shouldn't let your friends get you down. Chin up! You can do it!

Don't listen to them. Only you know what you can do and what is right for you.

When I mentioned to a friend of mine I was thinking about LVN school, she told me the same thing, I should just go straight for the RN. She said her sister (who decided not to be a nurse) told her LVNs weren't being hired. In our area, though, that is just simply not true. However, my ultimate goal is OB, so I will ultimately become an RN because that will open up more hospital OB options for me. I don't have to do it forever but I want to do it a long while. There are several other fields I would be happy in as well and LVN will serve me well in those areas.

I'm going to apply to 3 different programs starting in Jan. but the one I hope to get into doesn't even offer the straight RN. They have LVN, LVN-RN, and EMT-RN. It is the program that will work best for me and my family so it is the one I hope to get into. I really preferred to do LVN then RN anyway. Even if I don't get into my program of choice first try and do get into one of the other programs, I'm still going to do LVN then RN. It would basically be a summer longer then going straight RN but I am totally fine with that. My goal is to go straight from LVN school to RN school (and probably not work as an LVN, other than maybe volunteering at our county's community clinic or hospital) but it makes me feel more comfortable breaking it down. In other words I feel better about entering into the process, then having the option if I really needed it to take a break. I sincerely hope that I don't need to do that but I have a large family and that is a possibility.

There are many different reasons for doing it that way and that is ok. It may be that you need to work as an LVN, while you are in RN school or you just want to be working as a nurse a year from now, or like you said grade wise LVN is a better starting point for you. It really doesn't matter, it's what works best for you and LVN is a great job and a credential that you should be very proud of when you obtain it. You don't owe them an explanation beyond it's what best for you at this point. If they want to know why beyond that, just say, "For various reasons but I'm really excited about nursing school". Your going to be a nurse, some people really don't need anymore info. beyond that.

Don't be discouraged. Apply for the LVN, gain experience and whe nyour ready go back. There is nothing wrong absolutely nothing wrong with being a LPN. An your friends saying that is like when people look at me when I tell them Im going to school and to be a nurse and they say " why don't you just go be a doctor?" So many great nurses and even some doctors started off wit htheir LPN. You'll do well. You know better than anyone else what your capable of.

There will always be someone trying to rain on your parade, but don't let them! Make the best choice you can for yourself and hold your head high! You'll be working faster with your LPN and you can get your RN later.
