Feeling like this is too good to be true?

Hello All,

So I have heard a million and one stories or seen on these forums about how difficult it is to find preceptors……SO I kind of had this thought in the back of my head..

Well I started calling around and within a week I have 3 potential preceptors…One is a MD and I had called the office and spoke to the office manager who is a super nice lady who was so eager to get information from me.

Therefore, we were emailing each other about details and the next day she told me to come to the office to meet the Dr. and to bring the paperwork..so I did…I arrived at a perfect timing…when the Dr. was actually in the office with the office manager…instead of with a patient.

He briefly talked to me and he seemed like a calm guy and was ok with the idea. Then the lady proceeded to fill out most of my paperwork and she said she will get the doctor to sign it and asked me if I wanted to come back to pick it up..

THe thing is in the back of my head..I feel like something is going to go wrong here…..like is this too good to be true? Is this going to go through? lol I feel a bit of paranoia? Because I have turned down two other preceptors...

I mean she does have my paperwork and all and I need this paperwork by August but I am going to follow up with her in about 2 weeks if she hasn't called me back (is that too long to wait? )

You know, I truly believe that ONCE IN A RARE WHILE, all the stars do line up in perfect alignment and all becomes well in the world. Maybe it just happened for you

I DO understand your concern though! Rather than put all your eggs in the one basket, you might continue to seek other contacts and do your followup with your Doc.

Just to ask - how did you connect with Doc? Did he come recommended from someone you trust? Maybe he is looking to expand his practice and you just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

My experience was somewhat similar. I had all my sites lined up when I started, then things happened to all my "preferred" sites. When I went out to find my first site, I was very lucky to get into a multi practice group. This allowed me to do my rotations with the various parctitioners all the way through...even women's health. You may find this doc is thinking about a NP and what a better way to see if the two of you will fit than to take you on as a student! You will have plenty of opportunity to find other sites for your various classes, but at least this gets you set for your first run. Enjoy and have fun.

AmoLucia: Thanks for the feedback!!! Nobody has recommended me to him…his brother is a doctor I used to work with so when I saw the name I thought he was his brother lol I told the office manager that I have worked with him a little…(bc I couldn't' remember him clearly hehe) and she said oh great!!! So when I saw him there…it def wasn't the doctor I was picturing lol

You are right though!! He is in the process of expanding his practice!!!!!! He just hired a NP for his new clinic..and the office manager was even like can we hire her? I'm like *** is going on here lol I know this is all great but I am like uh….so your point is correct I think I was in the right place at the right time!

Ihflahnurse: What happened to your preferred sites? Did the doc say he couldn't' fit you in the schedule anymore ? Had you done the paperwork and all? I haven't received my paperwork back because she needs the doctor to sign off on it still!

Is this dumb that I am feeling this way when everything is going right?

AmoLucia: You suggested to follow up with other physicians but then if they want to complete the paperwork…what do i DO ? That makes it kind of official and then what if I get two of them to sign the paperwork? What would I tell the other one?

My first arranged sites fell through for reasons WAY beyond my control. My women's health preceptor decided it was now time to retire after having to have some surgery. One of my general sites' preceptor developed liver and pancreatic cancer. Another of my preceptors suffered a massive stroke and passed away, and my final preceptor decided to go back for her acute care NP and moved out of state. Each of these happened within three months of the anticipated rotation!

Wow that is a lot of chaos in only a matter of 3 months Ihflanurse!!!!! When you did give the paperwork to the preceptor to sign how long did you wait to get it back in your hands?

Just a matter of days. Give the manager a time frame..."I need to have all the paperwork turned in as soon as possible, can I stop by X day and pick up the signed form"? They will get it done so that it clears the desk for other things they have to do, otherwise it gets shelved down the pile.
