Feasible to do Homecare without a car?

Published

I live in NYC and was just offered a homecare position. They will give me cases clustered in a certain area of manhattan. 5-7 Cases/day.

To all NY Homecare Nurses- do you think it is feasible to visit pt's using the subway only? Do you end up carrying lots of stuff with you?

Your response will be greatly appreciated!

I worked for the Brooklyn VNA back in the 1970's. All over Brooklyn. And I used the bus and the subway. Using a car??? You will waste too much time trying to find legal parking. And/or paying for parking tickets.

I would try it for awhile to see how it works. If it doesn't, move on. Personally, I would hate going to one home after another all in the same day, but that's me. When I did home care, I had one client for 10 hours. Does your agency have cases like that? I was just thinking as I typed this; it may be a bit different in NYC between LPNs and RNs in home care. Most of the agencies I am aware of had RNs go to do initial assessments, hang IVs, digitize patients and such, but the LPNs remained in the home of the more stable patients for the day (at least the agency I worked for).
