Go to fbi.gov for the application and instructions. You have to submit full fingerprints with the application. The application to the FBI costs only $18. I'm suprised this took so long to find out, and to demystify the process. This should set a lot of minds straight, yes? I am in AZ, and the state background check costs almost $100 with fingerprinting, why bither when you can cut to the chase?

This is relevant to my interests seeing as I had a background check done for school which supposedly looks up everything and got a "clean" check back but I've received a summons for trespassing and arrested for shoplifting but found not guilty and had the case dismissed. Also every job I've had has told me I'm clean so getting this check would clear out any discrepancies.
If you were fingerprinted, regardless if the charge was dismissed, it's on your RAP sheet (FBI, at least, check your state police/court sites also) forever.
