Favoritism with working(or not working) holidays

Nurses Relations

Published

A couple of the new nurses on my floor aren't being required to work any of the major winter holidays. This is causing "unrest amongst the ranks" as you might imagine. One is being groomed to be a manager(yes, a new nurse, but that's another post,) the other apparently worked a lot of summer holidays(do Memorial Day and 4th of July equal Thanksgiving and Christmas?)

Have you had this happen? How was it handled? How do you think it should be handled?

My facility does block scheduling, so everyone knows exactly what days they are working, holidays or not. NO ONE (not even the favorites) is granted vacation during the holiday season, so if anyone wants to take particular days off they have to switch other staff for it. The few that are not on a block or set schedule (like me) are required to give their availability for 2 of the 3 holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years) and one of the Eves (Christmas or New Years).

One of these favorites has now asked me to work his/her New Year's Eve shift. Seriously.

and you so very politely and discretely refused and found a padded room to cackle in, yes?
