Favoritism in nursing?

Hello, I work in a rehab center for the last 15 years. And have never saw favoritism this obvious!!

This nurse who works the floor and the don are very close. This don has brought other family members and friends to fill positions! Conflict of interest?

Apparently a position was created for this Lpn a admission position 11-7 pm mon-th no weekends without being posted. A lot of senior nurses were upset about it being they feel they have more experience being this girl has only worked there 2 years and a recent graduate as well.

Also, this weekend are census was low and she called in at 2 am to ask to be cancelled. When the supervision stated, there were no instructions to cancel, she called the don at 2 am. In which the don called and said to cancel her. Leaving us swamped with no desk nurse.

We are getting tired of the favoritism. we have already went to the administrator who is the acting hr at the present time about the made up position!!

Has this ever happened to any of you and how did u go about it?

I have to say, favoritism and nepotism are present in nearly every industry, especially in businesses and small

towns in the South. We are socialized to 'take care of our own', and that extends to finding employment opportunities

for our friends and family. I've recommended friends and siblings for various jobs before, and never suffered

for it. They were still held to the same standards as any other employee.

Most of the time there's no drama, but there was the one time my older sister and I were cooks together

in a local diner and had it out with each other....

I have worked other places clothing lines as a teenager and haven't seen so much favoritism as I do in nursing. It is unprofessional and does cause stress on the job.

I am a very diligent nurse and make sure everything is done prior to leaving my shift! And the ones who act like they are better are the ones who don't do anything extra then they have too. Except kissing the bosses ass!

It is depressing being all the patients will say something positive about me to my don and u never get any praise. Working hard never pays off! But I would never not do for my patients. I go above and beyond and would never change that about me!

It sucks but it's an unfortunate part of life. In the end, it doesn't sound like the company you work for is going to do anything about it so you need to just let it go. Do your job to the best of your ability and hope the people that are getting the easy hours/jobs/shifts will show their true colors. Karma tends to take care of these people faster than anything else.

I hear ya.

All I can tell any nurse here is, "Good luck with this issue." Observe how the leadership handles it. If they don't, and it gets bad enough, you have to start looking elsewhere. Seriously, if it goes along w/ how the leadership rolls, it probably will not change until the leadership changes.

Ive been at my facility for 6 months and have seen a lot of this.. If a senior nurse who's buddy buddy with the administrators makes a mistake the next day it's as if it never happened. If I make a mistake I get called in to administration, lectured, etc. I see it this way- if I do something wrong, or it could have been done better, I take what my coworkers say as constructive criticism and learn from it so it won't happen again.

My problem is that I don't let people try and push me. I will go back at them. Can't help it. If you are trying to make me the stupid one I will lash out.

I know I have to stop that about me and bite my tongue but don't try and bully me or make yourself look better than me.

I've been at my place for 15 years and have seen it just go down hill. And I blame the new owners of the corporation. Not enough time in a day to do what they want us to do in 8 hours.

Well I have tried to post with a comment, or reply here but the words keep coming out all wrong. So as "Ma" used to tell me when I was a kid. "If you don't have anything good to say, then don't say anything at all". =x This subject just gets my undies in such a twist!!

Is anyone familiar with Carol Gilligan's works, and her writings on the ethics of care? She argues that women have a different orientation toward ethics than men do, in terms of what is fair.

It is ethical to favor your own child versus the children of strangers. Isn't the love and compassion you fell toward your own child naturally stronger that that you feel toward a stranger? Extend that to more distant family members. Perhaps the favoritism diminishes, but it is still stronger than that toward complete strangers.

The nursing culture is largely female. If Gilligan's ethical theories have any currency, than they go some way toward explaining certain aspects of the nursing culture.

Which other organizations are dominated by females? Female subcultures in secondary schools? College sororities? The only other on I can think of is Catholic nuns. I'm not sure that any of those make for a valid comparison.

Funny thing I read this. One of the reasons I left the teaching profession to become a nurse was all the favoritism, nepotism....etc. WOW! OK...so either you kiss ass or get treated like one.

Life isn't fair and neither is work. Actually, giving her the job without posting it is probably better than posting it and having several people go through the time and effort of applying and interviewing if that one person was going to get the job anyway.

I disagree being she has only worked here for 2 years and there is better qualified nurses with more experience for the job. U r supposed to post new positions and it's mandatory where I work. I don't want the job the hours I can't do but others would have done it in a heart beat!
