too far?

Published

Ok, I just got a call for an interview at a veterans home. I'm not sure if its a nursing home or assisted living yet, but I think its state run so the pay and benefits should be really good. Problem is its about a 2 hour drive for me. Definitely too far to drive every day so I would have to move if I got it. I know moving is a big hassle especially that I don't know much about the area. It is near a big city though and also Cedar Point so that's a plus. I actually like where I work now, but their are problems, with pay the biggest. I thought it was ok at first, but now I'm finding I'm coming up a couple hundred short at the end of the month. Recent roof repairs on the cc and a new car did'nt help, but I still would be struggling without those. At my present job they do have a bonus after 3 months (that should be coming up soon) and at a year to promote longevity since they tend to have a pretty good turnover. I'm starting to see why as they can't keep aides for long and there is basically no benefits, not even sick days or vacation. But its a job and if I can make it to my bonus (and pass the review) I should be ok for a few months. I also have a PRN job, but they only seem to have openings the days I'm working at my main job lately. I'm getting tired and stressed about worrying about bills all the time (one of the reasons I went back to school to be a nurse was so I would'nt have to). I would also have to sell the house and it needs some repairs so I probably would'nt get what I want out of it. But I'm getting ahead of myself as I have'nt even had the interview yet. So what do you guys think, should I go or is it too far?

I can't tell you what to do. For me, a little while ago I wanted to go to another place too (thought I was in a BAD situation), now I have changed units and am much happier. It seems as thought bing STRESSED out can make me want to change everything in my life at that moment. I have found that it is much eaiser to coast for a while, take really great care of myself to get my stress level down and then I can make a clearer, better decision.

A two hour drive is very long. Houses wont sell for much now in this market (but I guess they don't cost as much either). Will the job really bring more income considering the amount of gas you'll be using? Could you use the bonus to pay off your cc's?

Take care, slow down and listen to your gut. :)

It depends on what a move would entail. Do you have kids? A spouse? Family nearby you'd be leaving? Do you look on change as an adventure or an ordeal?

:)

Well I am single, no gf at the moment, no kids. I do have family (parents and sister) in the other town I work in. But that job is only about 20 miles away. I was actually thinking of starting to look at houses there as I saw one that was cheaper than my current place and they keep raising my taxes here. But like I said, just about every ceiling needs work at my current house to get it sale-able and I don't have the money to fix it yet (although I'm trying to fix some of the not so bad ones myself, but it is time consuming scraping them down). Although I like the area I'm at, it does seem like I'm in a rut as I never go anywhere or do anything besides going to the gym a couple times a week and going to work...

Don't know how the rental market is where you are, but IF you decide to take the other job, you could rent your house out and rent a house/apartment in your new job's town....that would be a lot easier to undo than deciding, after you uprooted and moved, that the new town/job sucks worse than the old one...just my :twocents:

well, if your single I guess that is a different story. I agree with the above, you could just rent for a while and see if you like it. Just don't do anything crazy on a whim. City's are nice, I live near Chicago and I think I'd go nuts if I didn't have the city next to me to go out and just have fun. I have lived here my entire life so I don't know what it would be like to move to a new city and start new.

Well, I decided at the last minute that it was too far, so I did'nt go. I mean it would be about a full tank of gas to go there and back. If it did sound good I would have to search for a house or apartment in the area while trying to sell my house. Ironically I got a call for another job too. Its a little closer (about 45 miles), which seems more realistic as far as I could drive back and forth until I found something closer. It sounds like the pay and benefits are really good for an LPN there. But its at a prison and I'm not sure about that. I do have some experience in corrections as my last job was at a jail and it was very stressful at times. We'll have to see as soon as I get more info on it. It would be nice not to worry about bills as much though...

I worked for a few years at a hospital that was 2 hours' drive from home -- I worked a weekends-only position, and rented a room (in someone's home) v. cheaply in the other town to stay overnight one night a week. Even with a long drive, if you could work doubles or 12-hour shifts (as so many places do now), and do two or three in a row and stay over just those couple (or days :)) a week, it's v. "do-able."

I'm starting to feel guilty now about not going or calling or anything. I hope I did'nt mess up an opportunity. The other place (prison) has'nt sent their info yet so I'm wondering about that too. I think I'll give them a call if it does'nt show up by tomorrow. I thought they were going to send it right away...
