so, I am a nursing home worker, not a nurse but refer to this site often. I work on a 32 resident home. Came back after two days off to find a new lady moved in. Exact same name as my great aunt minus maiden name. So I am about 99.9% sure it is who I think it is. Not to mention she has my grandmother (her sisters) obituary in a frame in her room. She is at away tonight (she still drives) so I have not met her yet. May have seen her at my grandmother's funeral in 2013. Like not a close nit family..I am wondering if I should tell her who I am (if she knows my father she will know anyway or what to do if she realizes. What rules there are for me. I do meds and am the only person trained on my shift so I have to provide at least that care. I have staff that can shower her if she needs the help etc. Obviously that I need to treat her like everyone else. But is there anything else I should know. Kinda excited to meet her tomorrow night though.

Close *knit* family not nit.
Talk with your boss, talk with the resident with your boss present. If you are the only person that can give meds explain that. Set up boundaries now and clear the air.

Years ago, when I was working on the Hematology ward, I took care of an old man whose family was all gone, and apparently he had no friends. He never had any visitors. I took to spending those slow moments we occasionally get chatting with him. I took him to the cafeteria to get ice cream when that's the only thing he would eat -- and our hospital cafeteria had some decadent ice cream due to our association with the university and their agriculture program experimenting to increase butter fat in cow's milk. I brought him crossword puzzles, etc. Then the day came when he died, and someone needed to call his next of kin. Turned out, the NOK was my grandmother! He was her long lost cousin.
That's great news.
Actually is going very well. She is very able so showers herself dresses her self. I give her meds that's about it. Get to chat with her every once in a while and learning about my relatives ive never met is a perk as well. Although my father wants to come visit her and said he'd come pick me up to go. I'm like just go see her? At first she thought I was a stalker asking her if her maiden name was -----, married to Dennis, sister Edna until I said Edna was my grandmother. She even still drives, my grandmother passed with all alzheimers so some what expected that but she seems very sharp and with it. Thanks all! I really enjoy this site.
