Familial Mediterranean Fever

One of my students has familial Mediterranean fever. My school has a 24 hour fever free policy. Does anyone have suggestions for what I can do to avoid unnecessarily excluding this child?

Have the family speak with their provider and establish guidelines under which circumstances should they be excluded from school should their FMF is exacerbated. Also, since the fever is usually accompanied with inflammation in certain parts of the body and/or abdominal pain, that can help determine if the child's fever is due to FMF or another illness they should be sent home for. However, if their symptoms are really severe, the student may rather go home anyway.

Thank you so much. Based on my student population, it was only a matter of time before we had to deal with this. Still trying to convince administration that this kid should not have to go home with every fever.

Either I've heard of this before and completely forgotten it or I've never heard of it!!!! Regardless, your post compelled me to blow the dust off the research portion of my brain to look it up; so I learned something NEW...thanks!

If you have documentation and orders from the MD, I'd treat it like any other chronic or genetic disorder. An IHP should cover it and possibly a 504.

Unfortunately, as a private school nurse who is hired by the school, I don't have IHPs or 504s on my kids. I'm lucky if I am informed of existing issues. Even the teachers an admin don't tell me much.
