Fall 2010 UCLA MECN applicants share your comments/concerns

Published

Just a reminder for whoever interested in applying to fall 2010 UCLA MECN program, the deadline is Nov. 2, 2009.

Let me share my story. I mailed my application to UCLA SON two weeks ago via certified mail. I thought I could track my package on USPS website. However, it only showed that the postal service received my package and there was no more further info regarding the arrival at UCLA. I panicked and called the USPS three times with three different phone #s. And I went to my local postal office to recall my package. NO LUCK. They told me to call PO with 90095 zip code. Finally, I talked to the right person who worked in the Village postal in Westwood. He said UCLA had its own postal service system and it did not conform any kind of mailing. I was sort of relief that knowing my package was with UCLA SON. This is my first time applying to MECN. Anyone who is re-applicant out here, do you mind share your previous experience with UCLA-MECN?

Hi Tokebi211

Congratulations on getting into UCLA!!

Do you mind telling me what number you were on the waitlist? I am on the waitlist too and was wondering how far down they may have moved....

Thanks, and good luck with the course :-)

Tokebi211, that's great news. Congratulations!

Sandman and Tokebi211 I will be attending as well. Really looking forward to meeting you at orientation and starting classes this fall!

Thank you, can't wait to meet you guys.

Musicgal, I was number one -- I couldn't believe my eyes and seriously thought the letter was typo. I know the first one on the list getting in doesn't show you much progression, but I was notified fairly quickly. It was mid-March when I got the email saying one person chose not to attend UCLA and I was accepted. So there have probably been a few more by now.

Tokebi211, thanks a LOT for letting me know so quickly. That is fantastic and really exciting! I will keep my fingers crossed :-)

Thanks again....

No problem, Musicgal. I wish you luck!

Hey everyone. Anyone taking epidemiology at UCLA during the summer? Someone mentioned taking Nursing 50. Can we take either nursing 50 or epidemiolgy 100? Nursing 50 seems to be just 2 days a week for 2 hours per day while Epi 100 is 3 days a week 3 1/2 hours per day. So if Nursing 50 is acceptable I'll probably take that but I need to know for sure because I need to request the days off at work.

Hi Sandman, I will be taking Epi at UCLA this summer.

Both Epi 100 and Nursing 50 count. From what I understand, Epi 100 can be taken online or in class. A current MECN student told me that 80% of your grade is based on the final exam, which would add some extra pressure. Also I believe that the first hour of Epi 100 is optional--the TA will be there to answer questions. (You can find all of the details on the school of public health's website).

The same MECN student had only great things to say about Nursing 50. She said that it was geared towards nursing and that many MECN students took the class last summer. Assuming that it works with my work schedule, I'm planning on taking her advice and signing up for Nursing 50.

Hope this helps! Let me know what you end up doing.

To supplement what vicb already said about epi 100...

Sandman, if you're trying to fit in working hours, consider these as well:

1. You can choose online option where you access lecture audio and slides on the web and just show up for the final exam at the end. The downside would be your entire grade rests on how you do on the final.

2. Even if you choose the other option (in-class), it doesn't necessarily mean you have to come to school 3x/week. The lectures are still accessible on the web. When I took the course last summer, I just made sure I came to the class to take the weekly quizzes, and caught up on missed lectures from the web.

The audio quality isn't always good, but I liked it for the convenience. I had posted the class website link a while ago on this thread, if you want to check out the course and the professor. I don't mean to push anyone for epi100, but I guess I'm just highly biased... I enjoyed it so much! :)

I just got offered a place for the 2010 MECN. I'm so happy/ excited :-) Does anyone know the start date of Fall 2010?

Looking forward to meeting some of you in the UCLA Epi class, and the rest at orientation :-)

Congratulations Musicgal!!! Yay!!

According to my UCLA organizer, 9/20: quarter begins; 9/23 Instruction begins.

Thanks Tokebi :-)

I just got confirmation that there is an orientation all day Friday July 30th, and another MECN orientation Sept 22nd. Classes start 23rd.

I have to take Epidemiology in the summer. I hear Epidemiology through the nursing school is easier, but those classes are in the daytimes and I need to keep working up until the last minute! Alternatively there is Epidemiology 100 in the evenings, but I hear that is much harder. Is anyone else out there going for that evening class, or am I right in believing that you don't have to go to every class if you do the daytime option - you can follow online and just take off work the days when there are quizzes?

Anway, I am REALLY looking forward to meeting everyone. And I am SO releived to have been offered a place. UCLA was the only school I applied to and I was dreading waiting/ working another year in my current job! I really can't wait to start and meet you all :-)

P.S. i managed to find a schedule for the evening Epi 100 classes, but not for the nursing school daytime Epi classes. Anyone know the schedule for the nursing school Epi daytime classes?

THANKS!
