Fall 2014 Baptist School of Health Professions San Antonio

Published

I am looking for info on the acceptance rate on the RN program for BSHP, or average TEAS scores that are accepted into the program. I applied for the Fall 2014 and I will be taking my TEAS soon. Any information or if anyone else applying???

Oh cool. I hope to get my card soon but probably won't be before orientation. I'm super excited also.

Just want to make sure.. even on NON-Clinical days we still have to wear scrub tops and bottoms and school shirt??

I had my processing day this week and we were told Scrub uniform is to be worn everyday that we are on campus. Either a scrub top or school t-shirt with the rest of the uniform.

Glad to see BSHP has an active forum running on the site. I don't think there was one around the time I was applying.

I am current student at BSHP, entering my S4, Senior semester in the Fall! Im off for the summer and would be glad to answer any questions you all may have in regards to the program

I also encourage you all to look into the school's SNA (Student Nursing Association). They should be there for processing days or student orientation days. I am the current Social Chair of the organization so it wouldn't be right if i didn't spread the joy :)

Best of luck

Hi @ReneeMorg! Thanks for commenting. I was curious to know when you started the program. Were you able to take classes/ clinicals over the summer and that's why you are graduating this fall? Also what was the hardest thing for you your semester? Do you have advice for us who are about to enter the program?

I started Spring 2013 and that summer semester I took pharmacology- worst and best decision of my life. While I highly advise to take pharmacology in the summer do not add assault to injury by taking the 8 week course. Instead opt for the entire summer 16 week. During that 8 week of hell- I was miserable every moment. There is no clinical for the class but the content is very dense and specific and if I could afford to sleep, I was having nightmares. It is not fun cramming. With all that said, I survived and it made for an easier, more relaxed Fall semester.

Pharm is usually scheduled for the fall semester when you take two other courses that have their respective clinicals. So take pharm early and you can have Mondays off :)

pharm was the hardest class I have encountered- everything else has been fine.

ADVICE: Devlop or stick with a study regimen that works for you, and be flexible. When I first heard that advice from a former S4 student, Intjoight she must be crazy! How could I be flexible on between reading and studying and clinicals. But having a flexible mindset eliminates unnecessary stress. There is no point in stressing about the end of a semester at the beginning of it- I'm simply wasting time and energy when I could be learning :)

take it day by day. I reassure myself all the time when I felt frustrated and remind myself of the postitives.

Keep your syllabus for each course as everything you need to know for the class is there as well as online in on Moodle. also they will help you when you apply to your RN-BSN program. some of the courses we take are similar to BSN courses and you could be awarded credit and forgo taking the class and save hundreds.

Attend all lectures because we have to sign in every freaking day. I recorded lectures and then went over them while I studied. Also if you don't plan on reading prior to class, print off the lecture outline that way you can jot down important notes during class. I never went to class without a outline

Overall I have enjoyed the program. It is time consuming so make sure your loved ones are on board and aware how crazy the next two years will be.

Whew! If there is anything I missed let me know :)

Whoa! Thank you what a rush of information! You make me even more nervous/excited. I know for us we have the option of taking pharmacology either Spring or Summer session. But that's a ways to go to decide which to do. I'm glad to know you are actually enjoying the program. I've been freaking out that I'll be so overwhelmed and stressed that I won't enjoy the program so thanks for reassuring me. Your advice is awesome I'm going to try to do just that take it day by day! I hope to see you at Student Success Day!

Hey Renee, would you say a rolling backpack is needed with the amount of books we need to carry to class each day, or would a regular one be fine? How about working while in the program? Do most students work while in the program, and if so, how many hours would you say is doable to keep a good balance?

No rolling backpack needed... At all. You'll probably bring one major book should you need to reference during lecture. I didn't start working until the second semester and only on the weekends. In terms of amount of students working it seemed that after the first semester majority of us were working. After you get a good feel for how you manage your time you'll know if you want to work :)

ReneeMorg- would you say that we need notebooks or binders? is there a large amount of papers that we will have to print out or is everything written?

does anyone know when we will get our financial aid money? i turned in the paper, and totally forgot to ask! ReneeMorg- can you help with this? do you know about the financial aid process?

I use a binder and print out the lecture outlines. There will probably be a fair amount of printing because the lecture outlines are so helpful. When we get lectured, most of the teachers are going through slides and it can get pretty fast. The library's computer lab has printing capability but it costs 10 cents per page, and some of the outlines can be every long...so if you can print elsewhere for free ..do so. If youre someone that doesnt need the actual paper - you can download the lecture outlines onto your laptop and just bring that to class to type in during class.

I used my ipad religiously during school. If any of you have an ipad, I HIGHLY recommend the app 'Noteability". You can import the outline in the app, record lecture and write on the tablet all at the same time. Most days, I simply brought my ipad and book to class, then used my binder with the outlines when studying at home.

During the first semester the teachers were very good about printing out the outlines for you :)

FINANCIAL AID: For first semester students, aid is disbursed after about 30 days of class. I had to pay half of tuition and then I was notified my grant would cover the rest. But if you have aid that will cover everything I do not think youll be required to pay anything other than the $300 matriculation fee. But with that said, you will probably need to come out of pocket for your books, because you wont have time to wait until aid disburses. They hit the ground running once the semester starts.

*I have a Foundations Book should anyone need a copy. Hopefully its the same one *

There is a program called " Project QUEST" that a lot of my friends are involved with that helps them with financial costs of school including scrubs, shoes, tools, and books so if any of you are interested the website is Project QUEST, Inc.
