Fall 2017 Applicants

Hello Everyone!

Okay let me start off with some background. I applied to KU SON last year (I was kind of dumb and only applied to KU, therefore putting all of my eggs in one basket) for Fall 2016 and was put on the waitlist at #30. I have two associate degrees and a cumulative GPA of roughly 3.7. I also have a 30 composite, 29 science on my ACT score as well as my CNA license. This application cycle I have applied to KU (again), Washburn, Baker, Saint Luke's, JCCC and will be applying to KCKCC as well as Neosho County.

I guess I just am looking for people like myself who maybe didn't get accepted the first time around or have a GPA similar to mine. I know by reading a lot of the posts on here there are quite a few people who go into nursing school with a 4.0, but there has to be people out there who have gotten in with GPA's lower than that right? It's just frustrating because I don't feel that a 3.7 is a low GPA and I honestly want nothing more than to become a nurse, something I have wanted to do since I was a little girl. I'd also like to hear from other people who are applying to nursing school for next fall so I know I'm not alone in worrying about whether I'll get in or not.

    Just as an update for anyone interested, I have been accepted to both Washburn University and Baker University for the Fall 2017 semester. I hope you all are hearing good news as well!

    Your story is similar to mine! I had a 3.7 GPA, which I also did not feel was that bad, but was rejected from school after school for two years in a row. I too got my CNA license in hopes that it would help. I am from California and decided to apply to KU on a whim because I was willing to go anywhere to become a nurse. I am so happy to say that I was accepted for the Fall 2017 semester, and I am so happy you were accepted to multiple schools as well! I have never even been to Kansas to check out KU, so everyone here thinks I am a little crazy. I don't even know where to start, but any information you have about KU or Kansas in general would be super helpful. I have heard it is a great program, so I am very thankful and so excited!

    KU is an excellent program! I was an intern in the School of Nursing last summer and from what I saw, the faculty are awesome. I did my first two years of prerequisites at the main KU campus in Lawrence so I have had a pretty good experience with KU as an institution. I can't tell you much about the program, as I never attended, but from what I have heard it is fabulous! I haven't heard if I have been accepted to KU yet but I have pretty much decided to attend Baker University because of smaller class sizes, high NCLEX pass ratings, and like KU, are based in a Magnet hospital so the clinical experiences are really awesome.

    As for Kansas in general, KU nursing is located at KU Medical Center in Kansas City Kansas (which is basically Kansas City Missouri- like they say "two states, one city" and it is almost right on state line.) Anyway, since it sounds like you will be paying out of state tuition anyway, there are a lot of nice places to live on the Kansas side and on the Missouri side. Kansas City has a lot of fun things to do and KU Medical center, where KU SON is located, is consistently ranked as one of the top hospitals in the country- especially for cancer research and treatment. I'm sorry I can't provide more information on the program itself, but if you have any questions about the Kansas City area, I'd be more than willing to help. I've lived in KC my entire life and absolutely love the city, and I hope you will too!
