Fair salary offer?

Published

I interviewed for a FT on call hospice RN position. Would work 7 days on, 7 off taking call from 5p-8a M-Thur. and 5p Fri. thru 8a Mon. I was quoted two different things which I didn't realize until I had left..she told me it was $16.00/hr plus mileage or "roughly" 55K/yr. Benefits are also included. But, when I add up the call hours which would be 123 the week I work $16.00 doesn't come close to 55K/yr and from what I gather if I go out I'm not paid anymore - even for admissions. I would really like this job but it has to be worth the time since it sound as tho' the calls are nightly and going out is not rare. They are checking references and doing my background check. She said she would be in touch early next week..this agency has 165 patients and growing. There will be another on call nurse during the week and 2 on the weekends. What do you think? Should I ask for more than $16 or is that fair?

Sounds low. Is she including the value of the benefits in that 55 k? You would make way more even in long term care.

not even close to what a rn makes in hospice...even the lvn's make more than that.....i was making $16 when i was a gvn in the late 90's....i work in patient hospice and make the high 20's per hour....re- negotiate .....i think it may also depend on what location you are in...but i think i might just move for that...

Yes, she said it was because its a strickly on- call position..I am going to talk w/her if she calls me back this week..its difficult to get into hospice -at least here - so I'm hoping to work something out.

I did the math and for 123hr/week, it roughly figures out to be $8.50/hr.......... granted, some nights you won't get any calls, and some nights you will be out all night.... $55-$70K is the going rate in metro atlanta area for call, plus mileage.

In our hospice, the on-call nurses start at around 30/hr, but are salaried. They do the 5pm to 8:30am, Mon to Thur and 5pm fri to 8:30am Mon schedule. Then they have 7 days off. But they get paid every week, as we are on a weekly pay schedule. They also get mileage from their front door to the patient's front door and back to their front door. Yes, they are on-call for many more hours then I am working (not salaried, hourly) but there are nights where they are not called out, or maybe just have a couple of phone calls and they get paid if they are out for 18 hours or if they never have even one call. They also know that if they are stuck, they can call one of the case managers for back up, as we offer every chance we get. They are paid the same no matter how many hours they are actually working. I did this when I started hospice, for the same reason as you. I wanted to work in this hospice and there were no case manager positions. After a few weeks one opened up and now I am a case manager. And ironically, will be probably going back to on-call this summer as one of the present on-call nurses is leaving. The lure of 7 DAYS OFF EVERY OTHER WEEK just gets stronger and stronger...lol.

I love the case management job, but have had many changes in my life over the past few months (all for the good) and the on-call would be a better fit.

Ask if they are really only paying 18/hr. I would think it is actually a salaried position to give you a paycheck on the week you will not be working. And make sure the mileage is door to door...you will not be sitting at the office, waiting for the phone to ring, but at your home, waiting for the phone to ring.

$16/hr isn't even close to reasonable... you have every right to ask for more. Our LVN coordinators - no direct patient care - earn $21/hr.

Totally agree with all the posters. I am in a similar on call position that you are going into. I work 7 days on and then have 7 days off (16 hour nights). Starting salary for me was $50,800 + mileage + benefits. Mileage makes all the difference in the world right now, but when they start passing out cars again, I'll need to re-evaluate a few things.

:DHello... was just curious: Why does mileage make all of the difference? YOU make a lot extra for this? Does is sound WAY off to you guys... I was recently told by a friend that a friend of hers just took a hospice position in the Baltimore, MD area for 85K per year, with a laptop and blackberry??? HOw does that sound to you all... Thanks a lot.... To original poster.... HOPE it all works out........... Sounds like they need to pay you much more:nurse::redpinkhe:nurse:... And thanks again...
