Failed nursing first time, no CUNY would take me back. What to do next?

Hello Everybody,

I attended College of Staten Island CUNY and got accepted into nursing program. I was in there for one semester and failed with 61 when 75 was passing. The course included clinical and now that i try to apply to other CUNYS no one wants to accept me at all. They didn't even look at my grades, they say no without any acceptions. I reapplied to College of Staten Island but they only take 10 people out of everyone who failed. Since i got 61 i doubt they will take me in at all. What should I do? I know why i failed, i didnt think it would be that hard. Its completely different from other courses. Its very hard to think critical. And i really want to be a nurse. I live in brooklyn, willing to travel to SI or manhattan. What are my options now? Thank you.

Yea I got a low grade in my psychology and in my prerequisite classes weren't really good as well cuz on my first semester I took all my prerequisite at once which was a huge mistake and when I asked them if I could retake the class that I'm really low at they told me I could but they only look at the first grade so now I just decided to transfer and retake my prerequisite classes. I need some advice you think it's a good idea for me to transfer and retake my prerequisites?

Sorry, but do not understand your post.

If you merely applied and did not make it into the upcoming class you can stay at CSI, continue taking classes and reapply for the next class. However if you were removed for academic and or other reasons the above responses apply.

IIRC most every CUNY nursing program requires a period residence before transfer students are allowed to apply for entry. This can be anywhere from one semester to one year, and makes sense. To do otherwise would put students whom have started at a particular college at a disadvantage as transfer students "shop around" for spots.

Hi, I was in csi too and didn't get in cuz I got a low grade on my prerequisites. Did u apply yo anny colleges to retake or reapply in nursing?

Your post still isn't clear as to why you weren't admitted to CSI.

Let's go around the back door of the barn.

What was your pre-nursing culumative GPA? If it was below 2.5, or whatever the program requires these days, then yes you are done as far as CSI is concerned. However if on the other hand your GPA was above 2.5 and you merely didn't make the cut this time around you have options.

1. Continue taking classes at CSI and reapply again.

2. Transfer to another program and start over again, or see if your credits will be accepted.

Long as you were not officially dismissed from a nursing program, your situation isn't dire, just need to find a program that will accept you, and to bring those grades up.

Hey all. I'm currently interested in starting my career as a nurse. I am currently attending Kingsborough and will be graduating in a few weeks with an associates in business Administration. I have took some prereqs during my time in KBCC, such as AP1 &2. I failed AP1 and retook it and passed with a A-. My graduating GPA would be around 2.0. I know that is a very low GPA, but is there any chance of me getting accepted to any AAS nursing programs? I've already applied to several CUNY Nursing programs already and got rejected, unsurprisingly. Right now I'm currently taking a CNA class hoping to work my way up. But the class is way too simple, I feel like there are more options for me. Is there any? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Standard advice applies:

All nursing programs basically have an admissions process that simply works with strength of the application pool versus number of slots open for each class.

Most CUNY AAS/ADN programs on paper have had the same 2.0 or 2.5 GPA requirement for years, even as some have added NLN, TEAS and or SAT test results as well. However unless the potential incoming class is *VERY* small in relation to spots open, someone with less than a 3.0 or even 3.5 does not stand a chance in this current climate of being admitted.

In your case the problem is compounded in that long as you remain within the CUNY system *all* your grades will follow no matter where you apply. Some posters have stated they either failed and or retook classes at one CUNY program but were admitted to another, but those surely were individual decisions, YMMV.

Note many nursing programs both within CUNY and elsewhere are now using NURSINGCAS, a centralised nursing application process. Here *all* post high school course work is complied to compute a GPA for nursing programs.

CUNY programs like all public colleges are in a situation in that their status means they cannot be seen as discriminating against certain classes of persons, yet the nursing programs for various reasons need to keep their board passing rates high. So again while the paper requriements to get in may seem low, most programs have put into place systems designed to weed out those statistically deemed not likely to pass the boards.

Your best bet though an expensive option would be to perhaps seek out a private nursing program that may view your past course work in a different light. Still a 2.0 GPA is very low and likely not going to get you admitted anywhere. Problem is that the average is culmative and it takes many "A's" to wipe out the affects of "C's" or worse "D's".

To all that post here, the real answer is:

Speak to an admissions counselor at the school you are interested in applying to. The reality is, no one here can tell you if you're going to get into a program. Even if the director of admissions herself (or himself) were here on this site, they would need to see everything in your academic record to make a decision. And as always, your chances of getting in depend on the number of applicants in that batch: chances are if someone you know got into a program with less than stellar grades, it was likely at a time where the (applicant) numbers were low (unless, of course, they had some "pull").

So basically, everyone here can tell you if they think you'll get in, but no one really knows for sure. You have nothing to lose by applying (excpet maybe an application fee), the worst they can say is no.

Interamerican U In puerto Rico does not require pre reqs..

hi lerochka!

I was once in the same position as you, CSI failed me because of a error on my final, and when i tried re applying they denied me. I stood one more semester to do some of my bachelors pre-reqs, since i was determined in becoming a nurse. I ended up transferring to BMCC and right away applied to the nursing program to get in, and i did!!!! do not be discouraged! i am anticipating to graduate this december and i remember csi telling me to look into another profession. My advice, try to keep a good gpa, and apply to any cuny school!!! good luck!

Do all the registered nursing programs in the US have the same classes and grading standards? Is there a any chance to get in with a say 2.7 gpa?
