Failed the NCLEX 5 times. Please Help!

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

I have taken the NCLEX 5 times now and will pass it this time. I am taking the Hurst Review in the middle of October with the plan of taking the actual NCLEX-RN in the beginning of December. I have previously taken the KAPLAN course and found it to not be very helpful, for me that is anyways. I finally began to overcome my severe test anxiety, which I had accommodations for during college, after taking the NCLEX for the 3rd time. This last time I took it, almost a year ago, I was so close to passing. Currently I am at a loss of what to do and how to set up an appropriate study program for myself. PLEASE HELP!!! If you have any thoughts, tips or recommendations please, please, please feel free to contact me.

Please & Thank You

sorry I just have to comment on this, I've been following this thread and while you've been giving honest feedback- I see that you've also been posting a lot of negativity not only to the author of the thread (who is honestly just trying to get some help) but also to others who are kind enough to give her encouragement. Your criticism and ad hominem comments based on speculation are starting to make me cringe.

Oh you mean origanized chaos ?? No, perfect example of a nurse, can put an IV in the first time, pass the nclex on the first time, but has difficultly with the bedside manner part and working together as a team. You don't need that stuff though when you pass the NCLEX on the first try, you just know everything and spend your time on allnurses.com í ¾í´”í ½í±í ¼í¿»

Really? I haven't been rude at all, to anyone. I have been honest. People have been down right disgusting to me & I have taken it. Calling me a horrible nurse when they don't know me. Care to show me where I have been rude?

So you just joined in January & have 27 posts, that's not weird at all.

How do you know what kind of nurse I am? Lol. All because of my opinion?

You don't need any critical thinking skills as a nurse? Really? Isn't it a red flag that the tester doesn't have critical thinking skills if they have to retake the NCLEX 3+ times?

Really, you just joined in October, strange.

So you guys aren't being negative to me?

How am I being negative?

You do realize we are in charge of people's lives, correct? By having to retake the NCLEX it displays that the tester does not have the critical thinking skills necessary to be a nurse. You know what? That's okay! Not everyone is cut out to be a nurse.

We need to stop handing out participation trophies. Just because you showed up doesn't mean you get something for it. We need to stop this special snowflake behavior, that is why we have so many people taking the NCLEX 3+ times and is also why nursing is going down the tubes.

Why does it matter when I joined? You literally have something to say about everyone's comments on every thread on this thing. Instead of handing out suggestions to the question, you have put your personal opinion of how the world of nursing should be. Like the NCLEX is such an important test, but the learning doesn't end there. You are so right that I don't know what kind of nurse you are, but you have painted a great picture for me.

It matters because it's so weird, you just joined & started *personally attacking* me. Lol! How can MY opinion, outside of work, tell you what I'm like AT work? They are TWO drastically different things. So no, it can't tell you how I am at work. Lol.

So you're telling me, you know what your coworker do & act in the personal lives?

How is the NCLEX not an important test? It's the test that lets us practice as nurses. I'd say it's a pretty important test. They put people in jail for pretending to be nurses.

Why am I the "bully" for stating my opinion & being factual but you guys aren't when you are literally being rude & calling me a horrible person & nurse. I'd say you guys are the bullies here, not me. I have not once cut anyone down, called them names or said they were a terrible nurse. All of you have, that honestly, says volumes about you guys than it does me.

All I have said is, that it is not safe nursing practice to have to retake the NCLEX multiple time. Not everyone is cut out to be a nurse. That's ok, I'm not cut out to be certain things & neither are you. Why have we gotten to this point where we have to coddle people, tell them they're special & can do anything. No, that's wrong. We can't do anything, if we fail multiple times that means we need to try something else. Especially when it comes to healthcare.

If you have a different opinion than me, ok. But tearing me down personally or professionally isn't the way to do it.

You are right, I'm a bully and I have attacked you personally and professionally. You are in the clear here, right? Someone comes on here to ask for advice and support and you say hang it up, nursing isn't for you because you can't pass the NCLEX. Guess what it doesn't matter if you pass the first time, the second or the tenth try, the board doesn't care and neither should you. If you do care so much write to the NCSBN. This person is taking the NCLEX RN, so what's your experience with the NCLEX-RN?? I'm not coddling people or sugar coating anything, because guess what dear ,I work with people who passed the first time (because they tell me) and absolutely suck at being a nurse. There is nothing I can do about it. I don't loose sleep over it and I don't tell people to pick another profession. It's my decision or yours to make.

Well ... here's the thing though...

Sometimes the advice or feedback that the OP is looking for? It's not going to be what the OP (or other posters) WANT to hear, but maybe what they may NEED to hear.

The NCLEX exam itself is expensive. The programs that prepare for it? Expensive. So that alone figures into my feedback -- the OP is literally spending hundreds of dollars. Now add to the fact of taking it 5, 6+ times? That's a lot of money ... we're entering into the $1000s now. So I'm considering that into my response.

... Now keep in mind, the NCLEX is a test of minimum competency. It gets harder on the floor. So you can have all the compassion and heart and drive in the world ... but if you don't have the critical thinking skills, the nurse (and his or her patients and coworkers) are going to have one heck of a time.

There can be lots of reasons why one might not pass the first time, or two -- English isn't their native language, bad test anxiety, illness, death in the family, etc.

... But when someone is on their 5th time? I owe it to them to not blindly cheer them on saying "you can do it!" I think this can be even more harmful than saying "you suck, OP!" I owe them honesty; and in all honesty, I think there needs to be a deep consideration as to why she isn't passing.

Well how am I am bully? I asked you for examples & you have yet to provide any.

Tone down the sarcasm, ok? It's not needed here & unappreciated.

Lose sleep, how do you loose sleep?

You are coddling them & sugar coating things. If you weren't, you would be honest (as I am) with them. Cheering the OP on when obviously after 3 attempts they haven't done it, isn't helpful. Studies show that the more you take the NCLEX, the higher the chances of failure.

I have to agree, and echo, what pixierose said. Sometimes the truth isn't what you want to hear & can be painful but it can be helpful. Why should there be unlimited attempts on the NCLEX when we are in charge of taking care of patients lives? When is enough enough?

You are right again, my comments are probably not wanted or appreciated here, but it's my opinion. Do you get that ?? It's not being "scarcastic" I have be right to my own thoughts about this subject matter and coming on here and telling someone to quit is not the way to do it. When is enough enough, you will never have a say in that. It's not up to you or me.

I am the most honest person there is and I am also realistic. There is no way I could judge a nurse based on if they passed the NCLEX. I have probably worked with people that were awesome nurses and it took them 3,4,5 times to pass? And I've probably worked with nurses that passed their first time and suck. Again, when you take the NCLEX RN, get back to me because that's the test we are talking about.

So your opinion to bash me is justified here?

Seriously? I am talking about the NCLEX in general because to become a nurse (LVNs are still nurses) we have to take the NCLEX. So get down off your high horse there.

You are neither realistic or honest, if you were we wouldn't be having this conversation.

As a nurse, we could have a say, use our voice & say something.

How could a nurse fresh out of nursing school be better than a nurse who took multiple attempts at the NCLEX & was out of school for months to years?
