Failed the first time in the skills test

Published

Hi all, I am a new member here. I took my state exam yesterday and passed the written part. I took the skills exam and passed 3 out of the 4 skills. I failed the PPE and am devastated. What bothers me is that my Proctor was texting and not watching half of what I did during my skill. She said when I was removing the gown it touched my uniform . I don't see how that's possible when my arms were fully extended and I was rolling the gown across the width of my body. All of the contaminated areas of the gown were tucked/rolled inward. It really frustrates me and to top it off, I watched my classmate do the exact same skill and the Proctor let her redo the skill completely over. This Proctor failed 9 out of 12 students and devastated a lot of people. I tried to talk to her and ask her to reconsider, but she said "I saw what I saw". I told my teacher and we are considering on going to another location but we are going to report the Proctor to her boss because she was texting and talking on the phone while students were performing skills for her. Does anyone have any suggestions for me and anyone from Southern California want to tell me where they did their skills exam. I did mine at the Red Cross in Commerce.

I think between you and your teacher your doing all you can. Are you challenging the resullts of the test as well as reporting her. I hope she looses that job. Poor CNA students are beyond scared and nervous the last thing you need is a proctor texting while doing the test. Beyond unbelieveable!!

Unprofessional behavior on the proctor's part. Hopefully you and your instructor can get this straightened out. Best wishes.

Can we challenge the Proctor's result and just let me go down and retake that skill over again?

I'd talk to your teacher about it. It might be a possibility being I feel it could be a ligitament reason to be able to take the test over. But I'd do what your teachers says is the best way to go about it. SheI am sure understands what steps you need to take to do this the right way that benifits you as well as here potential other classes in the future.

Unfortunately I think a lot of proctors fail people on the first pass through of skills "just because". It's more money for the testing company. I failed the first time through on the skills portion and when I went to retake 10 of the 14 of us were there to retake the skills exam. Unfortunately I don't know of a policy for challenging results because it really comes down to you vs. them as there is no video to prove that you actually did the skill correctly.

I think it sounds like you are doing everything you can, and I'm glad you have a supportive instructor who is encouraging you to report the proctor for unprofessional behavior.

I agree with you when you mentioned the money part. There were eyewitnesses that saw that Proctor texting AND she was talking on the phone when my classmate was doing her skill for that same Proctor. So there is proof by having at least 4 eyewitnesses. My instructor called me and asked how the testing went, and when I told her my complaint she said she just got off the phone with my classmate who told her the EXACT same thing about that Proctor.

I just took my state exam & passed. I took mine at Red Cross Glendale...out of 14 of us, 12 passed. The examiners were nice, patient & not too hardcore, so you might want to try taking your state exam there. I also heard the Red Cross Canoga Park is ok too.

Don't worry, you will pass. Sometimes you just get a weird testing center where the examiners are having a bad day & you just have to try again elsewhere.

Keep working on reporting that examiner though because her texting & being on the phone during your exam, wow that's so unprofessional & ballsy...
