Failed drug test & dismissed during second year of nursing school

Published

I am embarrased to admit I was recently dismissed from my second year of the ADN program (graduation was set for may) for testing positive for Marijuana.

I made excellent grades, perfect attendance, and I have already been offered multiple jobs when I graduate. honestly I did not see my pot smoking as a factor in nursing school... once I was a nurse sure but now????

I was told I could return in 2 years after drug rehab and over a year of random drug testing. I am desperate and cant wait that long! Can I apply to other schools and repeat this semester there and move on? Does the school report this to the BON? Who is the school legally ALLOWED to tell?

Does your school have a written policy? It should tell you who they report to. Otherwise call them up and ask them - I don't think anyone here can guess without knowing where you are exactly. I would advise you to get some paid legal advice which is confidential.

Most Nursing School's are REQUIRED to Repost Issue's/Problem's to their state BON. It's part of the accredition. Your best bet is to talk with someone at the school and see if you were to self report to the state's recovery program if that would help.

I do know if you try to get into another school, they are going to want to know why you left the previous school and they are also going to contact that school. So there is really no way of hidding it.

I'm sorry but as per the terms of service of this site members are not permitted to seek or provide legal advice. As others have posted consult your school's handbook/policy manual, the school may be legally obligated to report the incident to the board of nursing as per your state nurse practice act. You can also consult with an attorney to discuss your rights and options.
