FAFSA for nursing students based on parents?

Updated:   Published

Hello all,

I have a question about the fafsa form. I am an independent, and the IRS can tell how great my need is based on this status. Therefore, I would prefer not to disclose financial information about my parents.

However, on the form it says that some students, such as nursing students, may wish to disclose their parents info.

Anyone know how or why a nursing student get more financial aid by disclosing their parents information? I was hoping to get more $ by not giving any parental information.

Any input is appreciated as I rush to finish the forms.

Thank you!

I am under 24 but considered an independent I also saw this on this years FAFSA. I did not include any information on my parents I did not see how their income could have helped me.

Thanks. Me too. Guess we just don't know.

It says you may want to include the parental info. It doesn't say that you will get more financial aid.

Don't include your parents unless your parents are going to pay. Mostly, that question is there just to weed out those people with resources. If the parents are not paying, and they have resources, it will only hurt you to give their info.

The only way I know of that it could help your aid package is if one or both of your parents are your dependents. I know a guy who went to med school at age 28 and he had been supporting his mother, who was foreign, spoke limited English, and was disabled and unable to work. He got a sweet 2BR low income apartment deal out of it, and more grant aid, because he had a dependent.
