CANCER CARE: Cancer's Toll

Of all the diseases that have perplexed physicians and researchers throughout history, cancer remains one of the toughest. In its various forms, cancer kills more than half a million people in the United States each year, according to the National Cancer Institute. Despite enormous strides against the disease in recent years, it remains a complex disease that affects all genders, ages and races. Some forms, such as breast cancer, are on the rise. And while more Americans have quit smoking, the prevalence of poor diets, obesity and lack of exercise continues to put groups at higher risk of certain cancers. Meanwhile, cancer is expensive. According to Medstat, each cancer patient can cost the healthcare system more than $7,000 per month, with more than half of that going to inpatient costs.
