expectations of new grad ICU orientation

Published

What are the expectations for ICU orientation as a new grad? Should the preceptor just be "in the background" as a reference if you need, while you are doing everything pretty much on your own? I need some input from how things are going elsewhere. I feel like my orientation has been inadequate.

Do not let these people bully you into getting out on the floor before you are ready. I would bet they have a staffing crunch and want you out there taking patients as soon as possible. They have little to no concern for what is best for you or for your patients. This is a touchy situation, because you really don't want to alienate them...but I would be very concerned to be on my own as a new grad with only 8 wks of orientation...that is a recipe for disaster.

I am so sorry this is happening to you. Why are so many orientations run so poorly? It boggles my mind, because it is so important. Keep being your own best advocate because no one else will do it for you.
