Excited starting school in January and starting fresh!

Published

I seen my nursing advisor a few days ago and found out that if I had previously taken any pre reqs at another college they wont count only if we had taken them at the school we are applying to. I am excited about this because when I had first taken A&P 1 I earned a C which I know is not competitive. The three classes I need that count toward points toward admissions are A&P1, Intro to Psychology, and English Comp 1. I had taken Intro to Psychology and English Composition and earned B's but I plan to retake the courses in January A&P1, Psychology and English and go for A's. The pre reqs are out of 60 points 30 for A&P if an A is earned 15 for both English and Psychology if A's are earned. They also count each subsection of the TEAS V for points. The TEAS V is out of 100. We can take the TEAS V 2 times in a two year period. I am really planning out this next year as far as classes because I am putting my application in September 1st for January 2017. Since I already had taken A&P 2 I am taking that in the summer by itself but will be fulltime or 3/4 in fall and spring. In the fall I will take Advanced Human Physiology and Intro to Chemistry and Life Span Development, by this time I will have successfully completed A&P 1&2. Advice on TEAS V study resources would be very helpful and any other advice thanks.

The information you received is very unusual. There is no rational reason that your prior coursework would not 'count' unless you took them at a school that lacked regional accreditation. If you want to re-take anything to raise your GPA, that's fine - but otherwise, those do-overs would be a waste of time and money. Are you enrolled in a commercial (for-profit) school? If so, I encourage you to exercise a high degree of caution rather than just accept any actions that require you to spend more money.

I have to agree with HouTx, there is no reason to have to retake pre-reqs unless you took them at an unaccredited institution OR you are going to an unaccredited institution for nursing - an unaccredited institution will make you retake your pre-reqs if you get below a B, I know this cause I went through it. When I saw the rats leaving the ship that was sinking, I left that unaccredited ship and was accepted in a BSN program that is accredited and looked favorably upon. I was able to transfer ALL my credits C and above but not any nursing courses because, as it has been pointed out, an accredited program does not transfer nursing courses from an unaccredited program because the nursing courses are at a higher level and are approved by the accrediting body. In an unaccredited program they will allow nursing courses to transfer because they are not held to the same standards. Be careful retaking pre-reqs when you don't have to, you might be given the wrong information.

And like you I'm excited to start again too

That really is unusual. Most accredited schools will count all college coursework and factor that into your cumulative GPA. I would be very careful with the school where that nursing advisor said that. It does seem like they want you to retake them and take your money.

Ok my apologies what I meant was that the school and it's a community college, the nursing advisors said was that I can choose to retake A&P1 to get higher points toward entry to the program. Yes my previous attempts count but a year ago the school of nursing chose to allow students to take the classes again if they were taken at another college. Basically ruling out the 5 year rule attempt at certain classes like A&P if this makes sense?
