helps prepare health care practitioners for certified wound specialist exam
albany, ny - excelsior college, a world leader in distance education, has partnered with smith & nephew, a global manufacturer of medical devices, to develop the first interactive, online undergraduate course in wound care.
the web-based multidisciplinary course, an expansion of excelsior's health sciences offerings, integrates 29 virtual reality and interactive video animations from smith & nephew's wound care academy.
"this collaboration enables us to bring important topics alive for students and enhances their comprehension considerably," said, deb sopczyk, director of the school of health sciences at excelsior college. "it also allows them to learn about this critical subject matter at a distance, whenever and wherever it is convenient for them."
this multidisciplinary, 3-credit course provides a foundation understanding of wounds and their treatment. experts from across the nation, including physicians, nurses and other wound care specialists, developed the course. it was designed to help caregivers across a number of health care professions understand how to make appropriate decisions about wound treatment.
the course uses virtual reality and interactive video animations to help students assess the causes of wounds, consider factors that influence healing and select strategies to manage and treat acute and chronic wounds. students choose study times convenient for them, which allows them to continue to meet their responsibilities at work and home while completing the 15-week course.
excelsior's wound care course will help students prepare for the certified wound specialist (cws) certification exam offered by the american academy of wound management (aawm).
course registration is open to anyone interested in the topic."

Much needed for those who didn't get much wound care instruction in school.
