I'm sure this question has been asked and answered before, so I apologize... I live in the state of Texas and I am thinking of enrolling in Excelsior in the near future. My question is, what will happen when I graduate, take the NCLEX in Texas and then decide to move to a state that is not Excelsior friendly? Does that state just not recognize my RN license? What happens? Does anyone have a list of those states that don't recognize Excelsior or are not friendly towards it? Thanks!

Good question, Kat7Ap! I had posted a somewhat similar question today since my wife and I want to join travelling nurses after our children are out of the house and I'm concerned about my taking EC courses. Perhaps someone will know how state reciprocity works. I know Missouri, California and Georgia are three of the states that do not. Indiana recently sent out a magazine to RNs that had an article in it about EC and noted that they fulfilled the requirements for licensing so Indiana is good, but I worry if I want to move out of state.

If the state doesn't recognize EC's program, then that state's board of nursing will not issue you an RN license.
This is a pretty good list:

The only thing still up in the air is the situation in Georgia. Georgia is currently not licensing EC grads who applied after July 1, but there are still negotiations going on, so we'll see what happens there.
CrusadersFan, as far as I know, Missouri is fine with EC. A friend of mine recently graduated from EC and is now an RN in Missouri.

Is Missouri a new one? As of 03/08, Missouri does accept Excelsior. I received an email from Diana C. from the MO state board of nursing regarding this on 3/10/08. A copy of the body of the email is pasted in below.
What we tell people is that the College Network is a middle man between you and the school you go to. Excelsior College is approved by the Board. You might want to check with that school before you go through
the College Network, normally it is cheaper to go through the school.
If you have any other questions please let me know. Thanks Diana
Thanks and Have a Great Day,

My mistake--I'm sorry (and embarrassed)
I know that there was a petition being circulated because MO was considering not allowing EC. I had thought that with the petition they had stopped it.
You are correct--MO is okay with EC. Sorry--I'm never so dumb as when I'm trying to be smart!

LOL! No worries, it happens to the best of us!

My intention was not to make you feel "dumb" but just to clarify. You never know when things might change with these schools. LOL I just started my journey with them and I panicked, thinking maybe it had changed.
Lunah - do you know how many clep classes they'll take. I am an LPN but I'm starting from scratch with the pre-req's.
I don't know that there's a limit, but I do know that there are some CLEPs they don't accept. I didn't need many general ed credits, so I'm not really sure which ones they'll take.

Don't forget that Texas is a compact license state. If you move to another compact state that (for whatever reason) doesn't accept Excelsior grads, just keep a mailing address in Texas and keep your multistate license.

Also keep in mind, with any state license you can work at any Federal facility, you do not have to have that particular states license, just 1 license for RN or LPN. At the James A. Haley hospital in Tampa, Fl. I worked as and LPN with an Ohio nursing license.
You didn't make me feel "dumb", lholland, I can do that on my own without help!
