Okay, so I found out last night via this link (page 6, login required):
https://www.excelsior.edu/pls/portal/docs/PAGE/EXCELSIOR_COLLEGE/PUBLICATIONS/PROSPECTIVE_STUDENT_FEE_SCHEDULE_2007_2008.PDF
That Excelsior is now a Title IV, enabling it's students to receive Pell grants , and loans.
So the first thing I did this morning was to call EC where I was told that nursing students don't qualify. I then spoke with EC Financial Aid Director, and she told me simply put "We send it our application to be approved, and in turn the government approved over 30 programs, except the ASN, and AAN.
I am LIVID!!!...
We need to do something about this ya'll. With the Nursing shortage the way it it the government is actually discriminating against us!
These are the reasons why we should receive Federal Financial Aid:
-Most of us could qualify financially
-We are degree seeking students in an accredited program
-Even though we take exams instead of course, our exams are REQUIRED, of the to graduate.
We need to do something about this ya'll!!!...
Okay, I'm back with more info.
After speaking with a few people, and speaking to the DFA again, this is what I was told:
- ASN program doesn't qualify b/c:
-students take exams whenever they want
-progress is not monitored
-other EC programs are online, with "classes" and are monitored with instructors
Now, don't get me wrong, this does seem legit, BUT, it's still not fair IMHO because:
-We are fulfilling our degree requirements
-Other schools have "independent study", where they are not monitored and still get fed financial aid, the only diff is that they have to declare at the beginning of of semester, what they are taking, and have to have it completed by the end of the semester.
-We should be given that same option, for example I could say this semester, I will complete Nursing Concepts 1, 3, and 4 for a total of 12 crhrs (fulltime). I would then be awarded whatever they come up with, and if I don't complete those exams, within that time, the money will be returned, point blank, period.
Am I asking for too much here? Please feel free to chime in.
